An open house is planned at the newly-opened unit March 16. Open house in new mental health unit Memorial Hospital, Wood­ stock, will move into an ex­ panded Mental Health unit this weekend, and prior to the move the public is invited to an open house to view the facilities, Joyce Winters, clinical coor­ dinator, has announced. Visitors are asked to come to the front entrance of the hospital, using the South street parking area, and taking the elevators to the third floor. Signs will direct people for the Mental Health unit tour. The open house will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 16. Hie unit will provide rooms and other facilities for 10 in­ patients. When the unit opened for eight patients in 1981, it was an integrated program - that is, the patients were in the hospital with the medical and surgical patients. The clients will be cared for by staff members from Memorial Hospital and the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center of^ McHenry County. this relationship with Family Service makes this program unique and one of the few in the nation that maintains the close liaison both while the patient is in the hospital and after discharge, thus main­ taining the continuity of care. The new Memorial Hospital Mental Health unit is a more secure area. It includes a family room, recreational room, and kitchen facilities. The emphasis is on homey, comfortable, safe atmosphee, where people can easily relate to one another. The program offers in­ dividuals under stress to work out their problems in different ways, ranging from group sessions, individual recreational therapy, psychodrama, skill in assertiveness training, and problem solving techniques. All of these programs are geared to make the individual capable of dealing with the situation in the community. The unit's approach is to help clients become able to make changes, either in themselves or their en­ vironment, thus enabling them to cope with their situation in a better way. The Memorial Hospital unit philosophy is to get the client back into the com­ munity as soon as possible. "Stress is the inevitable outcome of living and sometimes being in a program like this helps one look at those stresses more objectively and learn to explore more effective ways of dealing with it," said Mrs. Winters. "We see the family as a significant and integral part or our program. Often the families are involved in a family session with the client to help make the necessary changes or provide the needed support. The client is only part of a whole system, and you cannot treat them separately," she concluded. LEGISLATION Governor James R.
