The roof is usually the first thing a visitor notices and, therefore, should be as attractive as it is functional. Asphalt shingles, including fiber-glass based and organic- based, are both appealing to look at and a good value. Available in many colors, including the especially popular earthtone shades of beige and brown, contem porary asphalt shingles are designed to last up to 25 years or more with only minimal maintenance. Their rugged style and warm earthtone shades, says the Asphalt Roof ing Manufacturers Associa tion, set a home apart from others in the neighborhood. Start on Top When choosing an exterior color plan, experts advise to start with the roof and to use no more than three colors all told; one for the paint or siding, one for the trim and one for the roof. For more information on reroofing with asphalt shingles, including a color guide, send 50 cents for a copy of "A Homeowner's Guide to Quality Roofing" to ARMA, Box 3248, Grand Central Sta tion, New York, N.Y. 10163. Vinyl Is Solid Re-siding remains one of the most popular home improvements and solid vinyl siding is one of the most frequently used material? They frequently lack the kind of architectural detail that 'gives a room depth and dimension. But that doesn't mean you have to undertake major remodeling to change the ap pearance of your bath. Give it an entirely new look with wood mouldings, says the Wood Moulding and Millwork Producers Association. Gain Depth Flat-looking walls, closet doors or vanities gain depth and interest with the applica tion of inexpensive, easy-to install wood mouldings. They are readily available at local home centers or lum beryards in styles ranging from contemporary to tradi tional, and can be applied ver tically, horizontally and diagonally, or used to frame wallpaper or fabric. Wood moulding is sold by the foot in lengths of three to 16 feet. Buy shorter lengths when possible to avoid waste. Select Finish Before the moulding is ap plied, paint it in a color to con trast with the overall color scheme of a bath, or stain it to bring out the rich, warm, natural grain of the wood. Additional information on how to obtain the kind of ar chitectural detail that makes rooms more attractive is in "Design & Decorate With Wood Mouldings." To get a copy of this infor mative booklet, send 75 cents to WMMPA, P.O. Box 25278, Dept. HP, Portland, Ore. 97225. If your home came with a nondescript bath, it doesn't have to stay that way. Just look at the depth, dimension and visual in terest that was added to this bath with the application of wood moulding. As quick as you can- take a look, write a list, make a call, run an ad...
