Warrior clinic helps youngsters prepare for opener -M•••£ " PAGE 19-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21. 1984 •BmNI V>X - .'i By Barb Ansell Plaindealer sports writer As the opening day of baseball season approaches, it was time for the second annual Warrior baseball clinic held last Saturday. The clinic is a program started by McHenry Athletic Director Joe Schlender and little league coach Gary Craft, to assist local little league and pony league coaches in preparing for the start of the season. This year's clinic added an opportunity for any of the players to also attend and receive some pre-season in struction about the game of baseball. The Warrior's boys baseball coach, Brian Wilson, instructed the clinic and explained its goal. "Hie clinic right before the start of the season is a good time for the coaches to pick up a new wrinkle. They look for a new drill or suggestions on how to arrange schedules." Wilson also briefly discussed positions, batting and bunting drills, along with cut-off and relay techniques. However, Wilson explained the discussions were limited. "Many of the topics we focused on were very general and brief because of the time restrictions. 1 could have easily spent one or two hours on each area. We provide a blooklet of hand-outs covering the topics ty* supplement what we don't cover in-depth at the clinics." r Also assisting Wilson, were members of the season's Warriors' baseball team. "Sometimes talk is nice, but using the players it is easier fd*> the coaches to see what I'm talking about. "The guys went through demonstrations of drills and were my examples when I discussed right and left-handed pitchers," said Wilson. "And the critiques helped them too." let's' talk SPORTS LOG JV Lady Skyhawks share title The Johnsburg girls' Junior Varsity basketball team recently completed a most successful season, finishing with a record of 15 wins against only three losses. A total of 11 swimmers from local communities qualified for participation in the 1984 State Summer games held June 15-17 at Illinois State Univeristy. Both Gritzuk and Garlick won silver medals in in the 25-yard freestyle. Both also competed on a 100-yard relay team that captured a bronze. The smaller Johnsburg squad was able to out-rebound Central 27-20 in the game. But the Skyhawks had trouble scoring from inside. "We weren't get ting any transition baskets. We had to set up too much against Central. We were hesitant tonight," said Fahey. Central, however, was having its share of problems also. "The roughness took our game away. We weren't moving the ball well. For some reason we were making the same mistakes. But in the fourth quarter we just wanted it (win). We were relaxed this game," said Brady. Central managed to take a 6-3 lead, but a Hauck's jump shot closed the lead within 6-5. The two teams traded baskets again, but jump shots by Jean Barry and Laura Jensen pulled Central up 12-7 to end the first quarter. Central built its lead up to 16- 10, until Hauck hit a short tur naround jump shot 5:25 into the second quarter. The Skyhawks came right back, this time Hauck dished off to Vicki DeBeau inside for the basket and she was fouled. DeBeau hit the free throw to cut the deficit at 16-13. After a Central timeout, Lori Oeffling hit a jump shot to come within 16-15. Central was able to built its lead back up with a jump shot by Barry and two free throws by Jensen. Oeffling's steal off the break cut the Central lead to 20-17 with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. Jensen, however, received the inbounds pass at halfcourt and took the shot with five seconds left on the clock. The ball went into the basket as the buzzer sounded to give the Tigers a 22- 17 halftime lead. Again, Johnsburg made a strike at the Tigers by hitting the first two baskets of the third quarter to come within one Kristi Oelker's jump shot gave Central a three point lead, but Hauck hit a free throw and Chris May's jumpshot at 4:04 tied the contest at 24-24. Jensen's basket gave Central back the lead, but Johnsburg tied it again on a jump shot by Hauck. The momentum Johnsburg had, however, swung right back t o C e n t r a l a f t e r t h a t .
