SECTION 2 - PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1984 ScKools ® Exchange students at Johnsburg welcomed Patricia Lot, from Brazil, left, and Laura Carlson, returning to her home community from New Zealand, talk over their experiences as exchange students. - A Johnsburg welcome has been given to Daura Carlson, returning from a year in New Zealand, and to Patricia Lot, a new exchange student visiting the Johnsburg-McHenry area from Brazil. Laura, a senior at Johnsburg High School, has recently returned from Hastings, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, after spending the second semester of her junior year and first half of her senior year abroad. Her experiences while in the Southern Hemisphere will hold a special place in her life. The opportunity to visit a foreign land is an experience that cannot be duplicated in any regular high school curriculum. The differences in customs, culture and geography can be so diverse that the chance to go overseas can be similar to travel to another world. Patricia will be visiting northern Illinois from Birigui, Brazil, a city five hours from Sao Paulo, Brazil where her father, a farmer, raises livestock and grain on acreage near Birigui. She looks forward to her stay in the Johnsburg- McHenry area and will be at Johnsburg High School during the second semester. Several families help make the visit and adjustment to a new land successful. The McHenry Area Rotary Club sponsors the students to the United States and are involved in helping Johnsburg students visit foreign lands. Present and former John sburg High School students in foreign exchange programs are Patricia Harker, Australia; Terry Boyer, Australia; Colleen Boak, Denmark; Peggy Nowak, Australia; Norm Rokosz, Bolivia; Terri Cluff, Ecuador Laura Carlson, New Zealand; Lisa Hartigan, Brazil; and Debbie Gahlbeck, TBA. A partial list of foreign ex change students visiting Johnsburg High School includes Juha Vester, Finland; Sheila Werner, Zimbabwe; Jenny Roberts, South Africa; Patricio Sepulvada, Chile; Flavia Fusaro, Brazil; Oliver Lenz, West Germany; Eva Holmquist, Norway; and Patricia Lot, Brazil.
