nnnn Survey finds widening aid to state small business State governments continue to expand their assistance to small business according to a recent survey by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Illinois-supported small business services include legislation, program assistance, and direct structural support through the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs. "State government and legislatures are enacting im­ portant small business assistance programs and doing much more to increase the public's awareness of small business." said John L. Smith, district director for Illinois SBA. Smith continued "Small business growth in Illinois is the key to sustained economic ac­ tivity, new jobs, and strong local communities within the state. Meyer, high treasurer of the Catholic Order of Foresters, announced he will retire April 1. Meyer, a native of McHenry, joined the order as a member of St. Mary Court, No. 594, McHenry, in 1933. He was honored with the society's highest award, the Legion of Honor certificate and emblem, in 1951. He began his career in the order as a part-time field representative in 1945 and continued until 1961 .cr-The preceding year he was Sec trustee and youth director of Illinois State Court. At the time'1 of his election Meyer was superintendent of Public Works for the City of McHenry. In 1948, Meyer was a delegate to the 33rd national convention of the order and has attended each quadrennial convention as a delegate since that time. He became chairman of the financial committee and served in that capacity in 1972,1976 and 1980. Meyer was elected high treasurer of the order at the forty-first national convention held in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1980. He was elected by 250 delegates representing the order's 168,000 members in 28 states and the District of Columbia. He officially took office Oct. 1 of that year. Meyer has organized the Illinois state basketball tour­ nament for 34 consecutive years. He was inducted into the COF Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976. Upon retiring as tour­ nament chairman in 1983, the McHenry man was honored with an inscribed plaque for his years of dedicated service. He has served on the board of directors of V.F.W. Post 4600 for 10 years. He was founder and president of the McHenry Little League Hall of Fame in 1976, and was a member of the McHenry Rotary Club. In 1956 he received the IcHenry Citizen of the Year aVard. Other honors accorded Meyer include the Chamber of Commerce award, McHenry Area Jaycees award, and a Certificate pf Appreciation from the McHenry Lions Club. He was selected as parade marshal of McHenry's Marine Festival in 1975 and was honored with a proclamation by St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in 1977. As a city official, he accepted McHenry's Sewage Treatment Plant of the Year award in 1974 and the Chicago Home Builders Building Department award in 1973. Meyer is married to the for­ mer Catherine Rothermel and is the father of four sons, Jon, Dave, Randy and Joe.
