SECTION 2 - PAGE 10 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1984 (Plaindealer photo by Wayne Gaylord) Greg Hall is set to fire the ball towards the goal during a water polo practice. Hall is the only returning starter from last year's squad. When Mike Shanahan looks over the McHenry High School West Campus pool during water polo practice, he sees a bunch of 'bandits.' The Warrior coach calls his squad a bunch of 'bandits', because none of them really has any experience. Most of the players on his squad never played orgainized water polo. They are just looking for a sport they can compete in. Shanahan looks over the list of squad members, and sees, 'bandits'. He has two seniors. One senior is the only returning starter from last year's squad that qualified for the state meet and finished with a 8-5 record. The other senior has only one year's experience under his belt. He had four juniors, but two quit. The other two have combined water polo ex perience of zero. That leaves a talented group of sophomores and freshmen to help strengthen the team, but most of them don't have much experience either. "We seem to draw a few bandits, who for some reason are not out for anything else," said Shanahan. "This is the type of game which experience will kill you. We're a real slow team. We have very few swimmers on the team. We'll have to play ball control." Experience won't be one of the Water Warriors'strong points, but Shanahan says he has some talented players. One of those players is sopomore Guy Petty. He played quite a bit last year. "He could be a real exceptional player," said Shanahan, who expects Petty to be a fine deep-end goalie. Another sophomore expected to help out is Frank Patterson. Shanahan plans to build his team around those two and his two seniors, Greg Hall and Jim Paulson. Hall is one of the few swimmers Shanahan has on the squad and is the returning senior starter. Paulson has only one year's experience, but Shanahan is looking for a good season out of him. The McHenry squad's start so far has been bumpy, as Shanahan expected. His squad participated in a pre-season tour nament at Latin School. His squad lost 23-7 to Latin School and 20-14 to Hoffman Estates. Hall was the main scorer for the Warriors, scoring four against Latin school and 13-of-14 goals scored by McHenry against Hoffman Estates. "We won't have a winning season. Hopefully, the second half of the season, we may give some teams a hard time. If we do that we can consider the season a success." Shanahan'y water polo squad's have qualified for/he state meet 10 of the last 12 years. He doesn't expect his team to qualify for the state meet by record this season, so he'shoping his squad will qualify through the B tournament at Palatine. TTie top three place finishers at that tournament qualify for the state meet at the University of Chicago-Circle. "Realistically it's a long shot for us."
