McHenry students officers of Phi Theta Kappa at MCC PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1984 Brenda Davis of Crystal has been elected president of McHenry County College's Chi Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Other officers elected with her are Sherri Bruce of McHenry, vice- president; Patty Schillaci of McHenry, secretary; and Jim Cook of Woodstock, treasurer. Their one-year terms of office continue through January 1985. Ms. Davis, a second semester student at MCC , was graduated from Crystal Lake Central High School. She has a 3.0 grade point average. After graduation from MCC, she plans to attend a four- year college in Illinois. Ms. Bruce, a Johnsburg High School graduate, is in her second semester at MCC and has a 3.38 GPA. After graduation from MCC, she plans to study nutrition at a four-year college. Ms. Schillaci is a graduate of McHenry West High School. A PATTY SCHILLACI second semester student at MCC, she has earned a 3.7 GPA. After graduation from MCC, she plans to continue her studies as a communications major at Bradley University. A Second semester student at SHERRI BRUCE MCC, Cook has earned a 3.5 GPA. Upon graduation from MCC, he plans to attend the College of Business at Northern Illinois University. PTK is an honor fraternity that recognizes intellectual achievement of full ' time students attending two-year colleges. To be eligible for membership, a student must have completed 12 semester hours and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. • As president, Ms. Davis says she would like to make PTK more visible at MCC. "I would like to see the people in the college know about it," she says. "We will do that by making it a more active organization than it has been in the past. " As a step in that direction, the Chi Upsilon chapter plans to be represented at the PTK national convention March 22-24 in Washington DC. Approximately eight members plan to attend that convention to learn more about what other PTK chapters across the country are doign. Anyone wanting more in formation about PTK may contact Ms. Davis at MCC. $500 scholarship offered by MCC Student Life group Applications for the $500 scholarship being awarded to a graduating McHenry County high school senior by the McHenry County % College Student Life Committee are now available. The recipient must enroll at McHenry County College within one academic year of high school graduation or forfeit the scholarship, which is to be used for educational needs only. To be eligible, the high school senior must provide two per sonal recommendations, one from school and one from non- school personnel, and must submit a typed application to MCC Director of Student Ac tivities Cindy Johnson by April 17. A six-member scholarship committee consisting of two MCC faculty representatives, one member of the Student Life Committee, one financial aid repesentative and two college counselors will objectively evaluate the candidates based on response to a question per taining to why they think they should be the scholarship recipient and one asking about their careers goals; as well as personal qualities, participation in extracurricular activities and academic status. Applications are available in the MCC Student Activities office, which is adjacent to the college's cafeteria, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., or call 455-3700, extension 273, and an ap plication can be mailed. The scholarship winner will be notified in early May and will be invited to attend MCC's Student Awards banquet May 11, at which time the individual will receive an award certificate. The MCC Student Life Committee scholarship will be funded through proceeds from the Good News Bears Basketball game, to be held at the college Sunday, April 1. Schools © Marian aides aid blood draw "Where there is blood there is life" says the Aurora Area Blood Bank representative. The Marian Central Catholic High School Student Council agrees, and that is why this organization is co-sponsoring a blood drive at the school Friday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to l^).m. Volunteers from the Marian Central student body, faculty, and staff will be donating blood to aid the bank in meeting the continual need in our area. 'The Aurora Area Blood Bank is a community blood center established in 1943...and it provides all the blood and blood component needs of patients in 22 hospitals in 10 contiguous counties in Illinois." The Marian Central Student Council participates annually in this worthy cause. "There are many ways to help the community" says Jim Militello, Student Council president, "and Marian Central students and staff feel this is just one important way to show community support." Gerri Kocher named to 'Who's Who' Marquette University's Office of Student Life has announced its selections for Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Forty-seven MU students were named to the list. Selection was based on community service, campus involvement, and high academic standing as well as outstanding achievement. Gerri L. Kocher, 704 W. Barbara Pintozzi studies in Rome During the 1983 academic year some 300 college sophomores, juniors and seniors from over 80 different univer sities and colleges in the U.S. will be enrolled in either a semester or academic year of study and travel at the Rome Center campus of Loyola University of Chicago. Barbara Pintozzi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pintozzi of Arlington Heights, formerly of McHenry, is presently in Rome. She is a junior History major. Drawing upon Rome's historical and cultural background, the center offers courses in 13 departments, ranging from Renaissance Art, Classical Archaeology, to Continental Literature and Ancient and Medieval Political Thought. Students can choose from approximately 60 different courses, all of which are taught in English, except for the Italian language courses. ON DEAN'S LIST Charles Temple has been . informed that he has been placed on the Dean's list for the fall semester in the Armour College of Engineering, Illinois Institute of Technology. CHOOEGE HONORS Brenda J. Eylander, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Richard Eylander, of 4806 Willow Lane, McHenry, has achieved the honor of being on the Dean's List at Mid-America Nazarene College, in Olathe, Kas. To earn placement on the Dean's list, a student at Mid-America Nazarene College must carry a full course load and attain a grade-point average equivalent to graduation with honors. Scott Jones tops Millikin students Millikin University has honored an area student for his academic achievements this past fall. Named to the High Deans' list was Scott Jones of Spring Grove. The High Deans' list includes students who achieved a straight A average (4.0 on a 4 point scale) and completed at least 12 graded, credits of academic work during the semester. Scott Jones is a sophomore biology major and a 1982 graduate of Richmond-Burton High School.
