WARRIORS from page 18 year. They have a lot of retur ning people. A lot of people are returning for Crystal Lake Central. They'll be v pretty strong. "We finished with a 6-8 record last year in the conference. We either split or beat everyone except for Dundee and Crystal Lake South. I think, potentially, we can finish as good or better than 7-7." Wilson likes the fact he has nine juniors and nine seniors to work with. He feels he has a good group of kids, added with the knowledge his juniors won the conference title as fresh* men. "Catching should improve and Overall fielding is one of our strengths." Three from the starting infield last year have returned. Dunne, Mike Podpora and Kris Teuber are returning, while Tim Pankiewicz will be taking over second base after playing in the outfield last spring. Pat Cameron is a returning starter from the outfield and he also caught behind the plate. Moore was a part-time starter in the outfield. Hawley is returning PAGE 17 - PLAINPEALBR - WEDNESDAY. Gone to graduation are the top two hitters of a year ago, but Warrior skipper Pat Wirtz still has five players who batted .300 or better last season. Add the five juniors who joined the varsity from a sophomore squad that blitzed the Fox Valley Conference with an undefeated record a year ago, and there is power to burn. However, Wirtz isn't counting on power alone to win a FVC title that eluded hii &ftld l&t' season. In a conference full of hitters, he believes it will be the team with the best pitching which will come up on top. "The key is going to be pit ching," said Wirtz, losing last year's top pitcher to graduation. McHenry's pitching hopes rest on the shoulders of Sarah Prust. ^ The senior righthander had a 3-0 record last season, but a 7.00 earned run average. "Sarah has been pitching well in spring practice," Wirtz said. "Sarah showed last year she has plenty of speed. She has a good breaking ball. But she has to work on her control." Prust gave up 49 walks in 90 innings pitched, while striking out 22. Prust will have the tall order to fill in replacing one of the main reasons McHenry finished in second place in the FVC with a 12-2 record. Cissy Pinkstaff became one of the top pitchers in the FVC with a 15-4 record and a 1.71 earn run average. Prust, however, will have the benefit of having a good infield backing her up, according to Wirtz. "If the batter hits the pitch, our fielders know what to do fielding." The Lady Warriors have two all-conference performers to help out Prust and lead the fielding defense, Andee Norton and Greta Larsen. Norton is moving from first base to cat cher, while Larsen will move from catcher to shortstop. Norton is also expected to lead the hitting attack. Norton was one of conference leaders in hitting with a .515 batting average and a .442 overall average. Her 25 hits was second on the team and she drew 18 walks. Helping out in the offense department will be Patty Johnson .365, Renee Mezzano .352, Larsen .309 and Prust .302. Mezzano led last year's team in triples with four and stolen bases with 26. Johnson led the team with four doubles. Wirtz says McHenry is not the only team with plenty of offense coming back. He reported Cary- Grove, 6-8 last season, has its top pitcher and top hitter back with a new coach and new system. He expects the Trojans to be the top contender with McHenry and Dundee-Crown. D- C has three seniors back, all- conference last season. Wirtz says Crystal Lake Central will also be tough With its top pitcher back in Karen Tacke. "Hopefully we will be in the top three, with Cary-Grove and us going for the championship. Central could be an outside threat," said Wirtz. "All the teams are good hitting teams." Other seniors expected to help out are Val Kilday, Britt Aaset SPORT COATS V2 PRICE! MR. BASKETBALL continued from page 18 his hustle was un- believeable." What Jensen meant to Carroll shows in the awards and statistics. The two-time College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all- conference performer scored 1,395 collegiate points in four years. He was the leading scorer on the 1983-84 squad with 371 points and a 14.3 scoring average. He led the team in steals with 58 and assists, 83. Although Fink was happy with his top senior's per formance, Jensen was a little disappointed his his last season. "I planned on averaging 20 points," said Jensen. "I was the only guy able to put the ball in the basket. I was doubled teamed all the time. My shooting percentage was down." Jensen's scoring was down from the previous year. He scored 415 points in 1982-83 and 372 points his sophomore season. He scored 237 years in his first season with the Pioneers. "My defense was always pretty good. If you don't play defense in this league you're in trouble," Jensen added. His coach agreed, "He could pass the ball to the open man and played ex cellent defense. He was a leader in his own way. He always took charge." As quarterback of the club, Jensen liked the idea of being the team leader. " Leonard Jensen Coach Finks left it pretty much to me," said Jensen. "I was the only ballhandler on the team, which hurt us." That hurt the pioneers enough as they turned in a 9- 17 overall record and a 5-13 CCIW record. Jensen attend McHenry High School between 1976 and 1980. Ludwig labeled Jensen with the same qualities as Fink - great defensive player and leader. He was all-conference his junior and senior year and finished eighth in con ference in scoring his senior year with 194 points. The Warriors finished second in the conference in his final season with a 10-4 record. While such schools as Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers were interested in the 170-pound guard, he chose Carroll college. "I only went to school to play basketball and I had to go to a school where I could play right away," Jensen said.
