McHenry student third in county spelling bee finals By Kurt Begalka Plaindealer news service Kudize....or is it cudize? Regional Superintendent O.C. "Dixie" O'Hara didn't know. Assistant Superintendent Richard McDowell didn't know. Eileen Palsgrove, language arts teacher and spelling master, acknowledged even she wasn't sure. But Brandon Hayden knew, and it made him the winner of the McHenry County Spelling Bee last week at Woodstock High School. Hayden, a seventh grader at Lundahl Junior High School in Crystal Lake, spelled the word correctly, defeating Ryan Jones of Cary Junior High School. He then spelled "ghastliness" for the outright county title. Kudize - k-u-d-i-z-e - means to give praise, and Hayden's principal couldn't give enough of it. "I don't even know what kudize means," said Paul Riegler, principal at Lundahl. "I was nervous," he added, comparing the spelling bee to a tie game with time running out. As for Hayden, he said he never had any doubts about winning. Then again, he did have to think twice before spelling "elocution." It's tough to memorize a list of 1,080 words and it took a lot of practice, Hayden said. "I thought I was going to pass out in the chair," said his father, Tom. Jason Lazar Of McHenry Junior High School finished third. He will accompany Lazar and Hayden to the Chicagoland Suburban Finals on Saturday, April 28, at the Tribune Tower. The first round saw four contestants falter on the words ballistics, paramedic, verbatim and shenanigans - not exactly your 'watch Betty run' words. In the second round, Robin Duren from Parkland School in McHenry, couldn't quite pronounce "pronounceable" with all its letters. Stacy Colson from Huntley Elementary School soon was bitten by "strudel." "Cummerbund" eliminated runner-up Danik Kooistra representing Harvard Junior High. "Exclamatorily" was misspelled by Lazar. All the sectional winners received dictionaries for their efforts and Hayden received a personal computer. The contest was co-sponsored by office of the Regional Superintendent of Schools and- the Shaw-Free Press Newspaper Group. Lifeline speaker is guest of stroke club MUCH DO YOU NEED?
