There is a "sneaky" threat to your appear ance--and health--that most of us never think of. Yet, it affects more of us than any other affliction except wrinkles or the com mon cold, and its effect is aging--not only physically but psychologically. It is gum disease, which attacks more than 75 per cent of Americans, causes 70 percent of all adult tooth loss, and is a major cause of bad breath. It begins to be seen in teenagers and is not un common among people in their late 20s and early 30s. It not only causes tooth loss, but deterioration of the jawbone which changes the shape of your face. . Dentures are not the an swer. Yet, this threat to your appearance and health- gum disease (technically known as "periodontal dis ease")--can be prevented and cured, if discovered and treated early. The great problem is that few people are aware of it and many of those who are, fail to act until the dis ease is well advanced. Un fortunately. even many dentists neglect to make a thorough gum examination a regular part of an ordi nary checkup. The cause of gum disease is easy to understand. There are bacteria in everyone's mouth, which form a gummy coating on teeth, called plaque. Even if you clean your teeth twice a day, you can not remove all plaque from between the teeth and other hard to reach areas. Plaque hardens into what dentists call calculus or tar tar. The products of the plaque bacteria irritate the Sums, which become in-lamed as the body fights the infection. Poisons produced by the battle dissolve the tissue around the tooth and cre ate a space under the gum line, forming pockets in which more bacteria thrive. producing more poisons. Despite its "epidemic" proportions, gum disease is the least treated of all den tal diseases. Yet periodon tists, the dentists who specialize in treating gum disease, believe that most eases can be prevented if calculus is regularly re moved by your dentist or hygienist, and If you brush and floss your teeth prop erly every day. One thing is certain. If gum disease is ignored, it becomes more severe. That is why reguBr checkups by your dentist are so impor tant. Always ask your den tist to chcck for symptoms of gum disease. If your case is advanced, he or she will send you to a periodontist who is trained to deal with all aspects of this threat to your health and appearance effectively and skillfully. The American Academy of Periodontology empha sizes that in 90 percent of all gum disease cases, proper treatment and good per sonal care make it possible for the patient to keep his or her teeth. You are the key factor in treating this disease. You must go to your dentist at least twice a year and be sure he or she examines your gums. Prevention is the best protection; main taining mouth cleanliness, the best control. That's why you should see your dentist regularly and be sure he or she examines your gums. SELLING YOUR HOME IN 1984?
