PAGE 13 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH' 28, 1984 Visits from grandchildren are fun for everyone GRANDMOTHERS LOVE TO TAKE PICTURES, even though grandchildren often have trouble standing still! But, if the dress is pure white with lace and pastel ribbons from the Nam's Pel Collection in JCPenney'i Spring/Summer catalog, who can resist a few snapshots? As the children grow, so will the collection of photo albums. Before you know it, there will be a complete record of the child's growth, and happy memories for all to enjoy. Photographed on location with Mrs. J. C. Penney. Whether you're called Grandma, Grammie, Nan- ni, Granny or Nana, grandmothering is a special time in your life. It's time to relax and enjoy being around children again without the tesponsibility of their daily care. You can develop a valuable relation ship of unconditionally mutual love and under standing. As special as your grand children's visits are to you, they are looked forward to with happy expectation by the children themselves. Grandmother always has yummy things to eat, fun things to do, new places to explore. And, as a special plus, grandchildren always seem to be so well behaved when they're visiting--a •* phenomenon that contin ues to mystify mothers! Mrs. J. C. Penney, who is called Mimi by her nine grandchildren, has found that there are certain essen tials for a pleasant visit. She suggests that you plan ac tivities to involve the chil dren. Their attention span will be very short if they are just "visiting." Some of her favorites from 30 years of grandmothering are: • "Share something with them that is very special to you and of interest to them. Maybe you have dolls from your childhood or story books or childhood photos. Let them know that you were a child once, too. • "Have a few of your clothes available so that the children can play dress-up. • "Be sure to establish rules to be followed in your home. It is not necessary that children have free ac cess to all rooms, closets, drawers, etc. • "Bake their favorite cookies with them (cookie cutters are great fun) and then have a grown-up tea party afterwards. • "To cut down on the framed photos that can take over your home, get a photo album for each child and insert photos in chronolog ical order. You'll be record ing their life history--and creating a treasured keep sake. • "If it's a special holiday visit, they may be all dressed up in their newest Nana's Pet clothes from JCPenney," she said with a smile, "looking pretty as a picture. Make sure to take many to remember the day. • "If you have more than one grandchild, set aside time to spend with each one1 individually. Invite one at a time to visit so you can get to know each one. • "Do something with them that will always re mind them of you. It could be knitting or painting or cooking simple treats or coloring Easter Eggs or short outings or family his toid ... when a child does things with grandmother, those memories'last a life time. • "Perhaps most impor tantly, grandchildren should not visit when they are tired and in need of naps. And grandmothers should take care not to over- extend their own energy levels. "As my grandmothers lived in Germany, I wasn't able to see them as often as we all would have liked." says Mrs. Penney. "As a re sult. I try to spend as much time and show as much warmth and love and posi tive caring to my grandchil-' dren as I can. "Of course. I can't help 'spoiling' them once in a while--if you're a grand mother that's just what you do--it's great fun!" The fresh, clean charm of spring is captured in season's makeup Makeup for spring takes on a cleaner, fresher, pret tier palette than in seasons past. The color message that comes through is based on a warm, sunny, coral palette with nuances of emphatically poetic tones, according to Glenn Rob erts, director of creative training worldwide for Elizabeth Arden. The Elizabeth Arden Sunshades collection for lips, eyes, nails and cheeks range from high impact "Sunny Corals" to fresh "Cool, Cool Reds" to deli cately pale "Nude Whis per." Glenn notes several new trends the fashion-con- scious woman will want to incorporate into her beauty routine: • Eyes have a more linear shape; the look is created by lining both upper and lower lids and stroking eye shadow on in horizontal planes, then blending up ward and outward. Imag ine a beautiful curving shaped flower petal. • The effect of makeup this season has changed ... now the face that demands attention is exquisitely feminine, frankly made up but with a gentle hand. Un like seasons past, colors harmonize and work to gether, there is no high con trast between features, just a blending of flower-like, healthy, dewy color. • The complexion is pale and delicate, cheeks lightly touched with blush, eyes shadowed in tones of hushed gray and green. • Lips are matched to nails, and lips are brought to their fullest, most-perfect shape via lip lining pencils and the use of a new treat ment product, Lip-Fix. It works to control lipstick bleeding, feathering and tiny dryness lines around the mouth. DON'T MISS US AT THE TRADE FAIR!! Facts clustered under the historical umbrella A French Guiana engi neer, Francois Fresnau, created the first raincoat: He waterproofed an old overcoat by coating it with latex from rubber trees. Louis XIII is the first person noted to have owned an umbrella. Among a list of his belongings, dated 1637, were II taffeta sun shades of various colors, and three oiled cloth um brellas embellished with gold and silver lace beneath. His umbrella stash was a very atypical male collec tion. Until the late 18th century, umbrellas were considered feminine ob jects. They were very ex pensive and often rented out by churches and coffeehouses.
