PAGE 14 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 1984 New dresses celebrate the year of the chemise In the Middle Ages, it was a garment worn by women next to the skin, with long sleeves and a straight hang ing silhouette. By the 14th century it claimed a name--smock-- and later in the 17th cen tury it was called a shift. It re-emerged in the early 20th century and was re named the tube dress or pillow-slip dress, becoming a favorite of the 1920s flap per. What is this fashion phe nomenon that received star billing on fashion runways in Europe and on New York's Seventh Avenue as "The Dress" of the year? The answer is, of course, the chemise. According to Clint Sco- fleld, dress buyer for JCPenney department stores, the chemise began to hint at its existence on fash ion runways as early as 1950. That year, Balenciaga de signed a middy dress that was to become a classic. The silhouette was cut with a full skirt but a top that was absolutely straight and un fitted--thus the chemise took shape. Loosening of traditional; fitted styles continued with each collection, evolving into unfitted suits and straight line coats. THE IDEAL FOOD OF THE FUTURE IS HERE FOR YOU TODAY. In 1957, the couture houses took the chemise seriously and Dior showed the "Freeline" -- perfectly straight, unfitted dress in wool, with a crew neck and long narrow sleeves. Ju*t the start These two beautiful ex amples of a new tailoring art were the beginning of mil lions of unshaped little dresses which clothed most of the feminine world for the next 10 years. Even mini-skirted ver sions appeared with theon- set of the English fashion invasion during the mid- 60s. These unfitted shapes have recently been called the trapeze (the name given by Yves Saint Laurent), the tent, and even by their 17th century name--the shift. The spring collection at I returns for spring '84 with these two slen der. graphically patterned silhouettes--the shape of fashion now. On (he left, wide-striped dolman sleeves create a clean, crisp line while the back features an asymmetrical zipper closing. On the right, stripes move in two directions from the strongly defined shoulders to the knee-grazing hemline. The envelope-style neck closure is detailed by a line of silver snap buttons that run down the front of the dress. Both dresses are in a natural and gray easy-care cotton and linen blend, and retail for gSO.OO. Dresses and accessories are available at most larger JCPenney department stores. . JCPenney (aod virtually every major spring collec tion on Seventh Avenue and throughout Europe) fea tures a new chemise--the Chemisier. Infinite variety The new variations of the chemise are shown in posi tive-negative stripes and checks, muted patterns or in vibrantly colored prints. Fabrics used are cashmere, linen, light wool, cotton, silk and. for today's busy woman, synthetic blends that wear so well. Clint Scofield says that, "at JCPenney, chemises are clean and modern with bold new details cleverly added." Outstanding tin the spring line are chemises with sil- ver-dollar size buttons, en velope style neck closures, wide cowl necklines and dolman sleeves. Although this year's de signs may be sporting a new name--the Chemisier--the concept remains the same. It's a silhouette falling freely from the shoulders, which is perfect for today's fash- ion-conscious woman no matter what her shape and size. Clothes for the great outdoors The craze for men's out door wear lives on. The boom in outdoor clothing represents the "Urban Mountaineer look," ac cording to Time Magazine. The designer clothes are both stylish and comforta ble, a combination which is most desirable to active weekend sportmen or those who just wish to look the part. To the daily city dweller, the rugged wear represents "camping and backpack ing" clothes. And, whether your style is Ralph Lauren's "Rough- wear" or just comfortable Chamois doth shirts, enjoy the outdoors.
