•MM Urge care in return to spring acti SECTlO^jj - jPAGE l - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 19*4 With spring, can golf, tennis, baseball, gardening and lawn mowing be far behind? No, soon everyon? will be involved with and summer activities, yard work of various types. The McHenry County Department of Health reports that across the nation, nearly 100,000 accidents Serious enough to require emergency room treatment occur each year as a result of the use of power mowers, power saws and hedge trimmers. Power mowers, especially the rotary type which have the blade tips traveling at 200 miles per hour, can pick up materials such as stones and sticks that are in the yard and send them flying long distances through the air at great rates of speed. Fingers have been amputated when people have tried to clean out their clogged discharge chute without shutting off the engine; toes have been am putated when mowing up and down a slope on wet grass in tennis shoes, the operator's feet slipping under the mower; richocheting stones, twigs and good idea bolts have penetrated into memory ty: human beings, broken windows lawn mower and caused blindtlees, and ride- on lawn mowers have tipped over on a steep bank while being driven across the bask instead of up and down ft. ~ v When preparing to mow the grass, put on cloee fitting clothes and sturdy non-slip siloes. Then go over the lawn very carefully picking,up stones, wire, toys, dog bones - anything that the mower might pick up and throw. Blake sure you know where any hard or solid obstacles such as well casings might be hidden in the grass. Add gasoline and wipe up any spills before you start the mower. If you are using an electric mower that is not labeled double insulated, never plug it into anything but a ground (three prong) outlet. Adjust the cutting height on your mower before starting the mower. If the lawn is wet -wait! In the spring or after not having used the mower for along period of time, it is a idea to refresh your tqr reading through the instruction booklet. Fingers have been cut badly and sometimes amputated by power hedfee trimmer and chain sawS when attempting to change hand positions or hold other branches out of the wajf or while trying to hold an electric cord away from the blade. Many chain saws continue to move after releasing the trigger and frequently have cut people's arms or legs as a result of this. Individuals have burned themselves on mufflers or gasoline powered chain saws or town mowers. \ When using power tools, remember to keep small children away from the work area at all times. Also, dress appropriately, wearing sturdy shoes, safety glasses and heavy trousers. When using certain tools such as gasoline powered chain saws, it may be necessary to wear ear plugs or muffs to prevent hearing damage. ftever wear loose clothing or jewelry that may catch in moving parts. Try to avoid working on slippery wet ground when using any power tool. Always clear away stones and other debris from the area where you are to use a power tool. When refueling gasoline powered tools, make sure that they are cooled and prior to itusing them, dry off any spilled gasoline and move them to a nfcw location. The spring is followed by summer and both present many opportunities to enjoy working in the out-of-doors. With a few safety precautions such as have been mentioned above, this time of working in nature can prove to be very enjoyable and very good for one's health. •k I CREDIT RATING Governor James R. Thompson announced that Moody's In vestors Services has retained Illinois' top Triple-A credit rating. general News Too late to order license plates, stickers by mail Automobile owners with license plates expiring in April who have not mailed their ap plications should biiy their new plates and-or stickers at a Secretary of State facility or financial institution, Secretary of State Jim Edgar said this week. It is now too late to send ap plications by mail and guarantee delivery of the new plates and-or stickers before the April 30 expiration deadline. However, stickers and plates may be purchased at Secretary of State facilities in Springfield and Chicago, and at more than 1,400 financial institutions, in cluding 660 banks, 171 savings and loan associations, 16 credit unions and about 600 Chicago area currency exchanges. "If you have a current license plate with numbers only, you will be issued new plates this year," Edgar explained. "During the next three years, all 5.5 million cars in* Illinois will receive license plites with the new design." Motorists wishing to keep their same plate number can apply for their new plates through a Secretary of State facility or financial institution. Pre-printed renewal ap plications have been mailed to approximately 530,500 owners who renew their stickers in April, and 45,500 owners who will also receive the new passenger car license plates this month.
