Fifteen • people were recognized of the 176 who represent McKay Nursery Company throughout the Upper Midwest. It was pointed out in the presentation by Griff Mason, vice-president of McKay, that this group was the most significantly improved of any group honored in the past 18 years. Eligibility was determined by competition. Judging included increase in sales and several items meant to judge customer service. Helke scored very high in the customer service area. Helke represents the firm in the Libertyville, Mundelein, Lake Zurich areas. Northern Illinois Gas (NI- Gas) and the Salvation Army announced grant awards in the charitable SHARING program have been temporarily suspended. Since the program's inception in 1983, over $800,000 has been distributed to needy customers, exhausting con tributions received to date. In order to continue the program, the company is en couraging donations from customers and employees. All contributions are matched dollar-for-dollar by NI-Gas. Contributions can be made by marking the box on NI-Gas bills and adding a dollar to payment or sending a check to SHARING, P.O. Box 111, Bellwood, ILL. 60104. With a steadily increasing number of applications, SHARING has distributed nearly $400,000 in the first three months of 1984. This compares with a total distribution of nearly $440,000 for the year 1983. "We're pleased with what has been accomplished by SHARING. The .money has helped the people it was in- tedned for, those who need it the most, but demand is continuing to rise faster than donations," said Mary Ann Millush a NI-Gas spokesman. Grants will be awarded as private contributions, matched by NI-Gas, become available. The Salvation Army processes applications and is the sole determinant of grant eligibility. R.J. Vavrik opens Legal Clinic Hold Land of Lincoln conference Private property week is observed in county The week of Arpil 8-14, is Private Property Week, the national observance of our American rights to own, use and transfer private property ac cording to Robert E. May, president of the McHenry County Board of Realtors. Our democratic society is based largely upon these private property rights. The American Revolution took place because R ealtors ECORD the English monarchy was in fringing on what the Colonists perceived to be their rights. They fought a war to win these rights-rights that we must continue to protect. Abraham Lincoln said "The strength of a nation lies in the homes of its people". Protecting our private property rights helps to make our country strong and free. We are for tunate to live in a land where we are free to buy property and to live in the area of our choice- privileges that are denied in many countries. Private Property Week is a time to celebrate these rights, to renew awareness of how for tunate we are, and to urge all Americans to become involved in their communities to protect these rights. Private property rights can be eroded by too much government regulation. While the Con stitution protects citizens against the taking of property without just compensation and due process of law, the right to use and enjoy property can be constrained. For example, building codes, property taxes, zoning laws, and many other issues affect you and your right to use and enjoy property. Ask yourself: How easy is it to own, use, and sell property in this area? The best insurance to protect private property rights is to participate in local government, be informed on the issues, and exercise your right to vote, May said. Senator Charles H. Percy (R- IL) will sponsor the third annual Land of Lincoln Conference for Illinois' Republican officials May 25, 1984, at the Springfield Hilton in Springfield. Patterned after the annual Tidewater Conference which gathers together Republican officeholders from across the country, the Land of Lincoln Conference brings together Illinois' Republican officials in an informal setting to debate and discuss major national issues affecting Illinois. Joining Percy in sponsoring the con ference are Governor James R. Thompson and Illinois Republican State committee Chairman Don W. Adams. The conference begins with a reception and dinner Friday, April 13, and concludes at noon Sunday, April 15. During the working sessions of the con ference, resolutions on topics of national importance will be introduced and opposing viewpoints will be presented. ROBERT J. VAVRIK Robert J.
