Bidder wins support for police magistrate SECTION 2 - PAGE 9 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1984 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 19, 1994) No upsets in the annual election occurred when an alderman in each ward returned to office for another term. The only contest for office was between George Bohr and TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by William Bickler for police magistrate with Bickler winning the election with a total of 252 votes to 85 for Bohr. R.I. Overton will return as alderman in the first ward, F.H. Wattles in the second ward and Albert Barbian in the third ward. These aldermen will serve for only one year under the terms of a law enacted by the General Assembly of 1933. Beginning next year, aldermen will be elected for a period of two years, and city elections will be held only on the odd years. Among the sick: Bernard Bauer returned home from Hines Hospital last week and he is getting along nicely. Betty Engeln, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Engeln, who has been seriously ill for the past two months, is recuperating and is now able to be up and about. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 20, 1944) The entire community, as well as their large family at home, are proud of the service records of the three members of the John Anderson family now with the army. Corp. Glenn is the only one of the three serving out of the United States. He was inducted into the Army on May 28,1942, and since that time he has been with the ground air crew. Lieut. Clarence Anderson, second of the three boys to enter service, was inducted July 9, 1942. In Fort Benning, Ga., he attended officer's training school and graduated as a second lieutenant. Corp. Harry Anderson trained in Florida in the amphibious engineering group. He will soon leave for overseas duty. We are sorry to learn that LeRoy Melsek arrived in New York aboard a hospital plane. After being confined to a hospital somewhere in England for eight weeks, , he was sent from that hospital back to the states. His many friends are hoping for his, speedy recovery. Emerson; A vote of the high school faculty resulted in Judy Hans and Sue Etheridge being selected to attend mini Girls State this summer. Their alternates are Jean Borchardt and Rosemary Roti. Bishop LoraS T. Twenty-one children from DuPage and McHenry counties will go to this statewide camp. Application forms for the camp, for children between the ages of 8 and 13 who have asth ma, have been sent to all school nurses and pediatricians in the area. Approval of the family physician will be necessary for camp attendance. There are limited spots available and children will be accepted on a "first come" basis, so it is important to respond as soon as possible. The asthma camp, which has been operated by lung associations in Illinois during the past six summers, is staffed by doctors and nurses around the clock, but rarely has a child become acutely ill at the camp. The camp staff also includes a therapeutic recreation specialist and counselors with special training. Camp Superkids, as it is called, provides many educational opportunities, that a child may learn how far he can go in recreation and learn how other children cope with asth ma. Swimming, canoeing, hiking, volley ball and the usual activities will be offered. Of the total cost of the camp, Christmas Seasl provide a campership of $140. Financial assistance is available for the balance due on sliding scale.
