Reach for Tomorrow...and Bevond Questions &L Answers What is McHenry Healthcare Foundation? McHenry Healthcare Foundation is a not- for-profit corporation created to raise funds for the Northern Illinois Medical Center. The Foundation is conducting Phase II of a capital fund drive to benefit Northern Illinois Medical Center. Phase I raised $1.2 million of a $1.6 million goal. The goal of Phase II is to reach beyond the remaining $400,000. Is $1.6 million going to be enough to finance a major regional medical center, and if not, where is the other money coming from? The total cost of Northern Illinois Medical Center will far exceed $1.6 million. However, $26,355,000 worth of bonds have been sold to help finance con struction of the new medical center. Why does our campaign need to reach beyond the $1.6 million goal? Much of the equipment that will be transferred to the new medical center will need to be replaced in the next two to five years, and these funds will be used for this replacement. In addition, health care technology is changing rapidly and there is a need to purchase new equipment rum to provide for your needs. What are the advantages of building Northern Illinois Medical Center at its new location? Patients come to Northern Illinois Medical Center from McHenry, Lake, and Kane counties. The medical center reaches south to Crystal Lake and Algonquin and north to Wisconsin. It serves all of McHenry County and the communities in western Lake County. The new facilitv is ideally located to provide service for these areas. Will the new Northern Illinois Medical Center mean more beds and more staff? Yes, there will be a total of 195 beds in the new medical center, as opposed to the current 136 beds. As a major employer in the area with almost 700 employees, the hospital will expand its staff as the hospital grows to meet the needs of a growing population. This, of course, will be done in a cost benefit manner. Will the new Northern Illinois Medical Center benefit the area in any way other than health care? The new medical center will encourage growth in the local health care industry. Opening at the same time as the hospital, is a Professional Arts Building adding an additional $1.6 million to the local construction economy and creating new jobs. Additional development will take place on the 87.6 acres that is adjacent to the new medical center. If the $26,355,000 was raised through the sale of bonds, why not finance the entire project that way? It would not be affordable to finance the entire project through a bond issue, since the hospital would be forced to cover costs over and above normal inflationary increases to pay the debt. By raising approximately $1.6 million locally, Northern Illinois Medical Center will save an estimated $6 million in payback costs over a thirty-year period. When will construction of Northern Illinois Medical Center be completed? Northern Illinois Medical Center will open in June 1984, three months tiht'tki of schedule. Has anyone from the community' had a part in planning this new building program? Yes, the hospital has a voluntary board of directors, comprised of residents of McHenry and Lake counties. They give advice, assistance and counsel concerning the provision of hospital sen-ices. Within the board, special planning and building committees were formed to help with the development of the building program. Will there be expanded services incorporated into Northern Illinois Medical Center? The current hospital serves as a local trauma center, poison treatment center and full-service hospital. It will continue to offer medical/surgical, pediatric, obstetric/ gynecology and orthopedic care, as well as other medical services. A fifteen-bed rehabilitation unit will be added to present services and a full body CT scanner will be operational when the new medical center opens, as well as an excellent outpatient surgicenter. Services will be expanded in the medical center in the sense that, with a larger facility, they will be more accessible and more convenient for patients. Furthermore, a larger facility planned for a growing population base will allow for the incorporation of techno logical advances. Will my hospital costs go up as a result of the new facility? Studies have shown that a greater expen diture would be required to appropriately develop the present plant. However, in the long run, it is more economical to develop a new, modern facility on a site which will allow for future growth to meet additional health care needs. The medical center ,is concerned about health care expenditures and will offer as many services on an outpatient basis as possible, such as Day Surgery. To deliver quality, cost-effective health care is an important ongoing goal of the medical center Board, hospital, and medical staff. What is the "Reach for Tomorrow" campaign? "Reach for Tomorrow" is the name chosen to indicate the hospital's goal of serving the needs of its patient service area, both toda\ and tar into the future. McHenry Hospital has always worked to keep pace with the needs of its many publics. Through "Reach for Tomorrow," these publics have the opportunity to make an investment that will ensure accessible modern health care facilities, to meet their health care needs.
