Mount Hope Methodist church celebrates 25th anniversary Two - hundred years of Methodism in America is enough of a reason to celebrate. But Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Pistakee Highlands combined the celebration of the Methodist Bicentennial with their own 25th anniversary as a church and held one large celebration. On Sunday, April 15 the church held a special service of celebration in their sanctuary at 1015 W. Broadway, followed by a buffet dinner held at the Pistakee Highlands Community Center. Special guests attending the celebration included the Rev. Jesse DeWitt, bishop of the Northern Illinois United Methodist Conference; the Rev. Sandra Hoke, Elgin district s u p e r i n t e n d e n t ; M a e Stinespring, Elgin District lay leader; and six former pastors who have served Mount Hope Church since its charter Sunday on April 12, 1959. Two large banners com memorating the dual an niversaries were designed and created by church member, Rosemary Prais and hung in the sanctuary for the celebration. The worship service celebrating the past, the present and the future of the church was jointly planned by the church's pastor, PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 1984 --following the a Church Zion Lutheran carries on tradition of Tenebrae Service To impress on the minds and hearts of believers the con sequence of sin and the magnitude of the Savior's sacrifice, the ancient church held a special service the last days in Holy Week called Tenebrae. • The meaning of the word "Tenebrae" is darkness. The ancient service began in silence and eneded in almost total darkness, the lights being gradually extinguished as the service proceded until one was left. The last candle was removed to symbolize Jesus' burial. In recent years this order of service has been used again more generally and will be celebrated at Zion Lutheran Church on Good Friday Eve at 7:30 p.m. In addition to the 7:30 p.m. Tenebrae service, there will also be a German Service at 10 a.m. on Good Friday. Easter morning services are at 6 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship with Holy Com munion, and 7:45 a.m. when the Zion choir will sing the Cantata "It Took A Miracle."
