PAGE 20 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY .APRIL 18, 1984 Senior looks for money from mining stock Q-"I am a lady of 84. My late husband purchased 500 shares of a mining company's stock over 25 years ago. The company is still in business, I am informed, but it has never declared a dividend. Is there any way I could cash in the stock and get back the money that my husband wasted in 1958?"-- Genevieve McC. A-Genevieve can ask her banker or savings and loan officer. She also can write direct to the company itself to ask if they may know of anyone anywhere who will buy the stock. The money might not have been wasted as she fears. Not all mining stocks have proved worthless after many years of hibernation. Q~"Ever since I came home from a hernia operation I have heard a low ringing in my ears. I have been to two doctors but they haven't helped me because the ringing is still there and I don't like it that the doctors act as though I am crazy or something. I really do have ringing in both ears. I know of other people who have the same problem. What can I do?"~ Mack H. A-Mack could go to a third doctor, a physician qualified as an otolaryngologist, which is ^^^^a >• • • Available At B JB rtcHenn fm W Since 1875 The Following nam aeaier Locations: •WHITE HEN •NORTHWEST •J 8 L GAS PANTRY TRAIN •ACE HARDWARE •BELL LIQUORS •ISLAND FOODS •LAKEVIEW •BOLGERS •CONVENIENT FOODS DRUG STORE FOOD •SUNNYSIDE •OSCO DRUGS •COUNTRY FOODS •JEWEL CUPBOARD •LITTLE STORE •HORNSBY'S •SULLIVAN FOODS •SUNRISE GROCERY •KAREN 8 GINNY'S •UNION '76 •DEBBIE'S GENERAL •LIQUOR MART •COLE PHARMACY STORE •McHENRY •COAST TO COAST •VILLAGE MARKET HOSPITAL •SUNNYSIDE GAS •McHENRY DRUG •FOOD MART 8 QUICK MART •J 8 R FOOD MART the long, difficult way of saying "ear and throat specialist." Such a physician can give Mack an audiogram test that is relatively inexpensive and which usually pinpoints the trouble. Q-"My wife and I hflve been audited and harrassed by In ternal Revenue even though we pay them $50 a month on $398 in back taxes out of our small Social Security income. How can we stop IRS from continuing to bother us?"-John S. A-Any program by IRS to collect back taxes owed would be likely to seem to some of us likeu harassment even though it may not be. Taxes have to be paid. IRS people have been known to be cruel and vindictive and they have indeed been found guilty of harassment of defenseless taxpayers. John can appeal to an IRS supervisor for better treatment if he sincerely thinks he is being abused. The supervisor will be certain to straighten out anything out of line. Q--"You might think that after all these years --1 am 67-that I would have solved most of the problems of living-income, health, hates, likes, loves, in surance, friendships, religion, etc. But I haven't. The tough problems of life for me seem to continue. Do you think there is something the matter with me?"-Ardath L. A-At 67 we do not understand how to live any better than we did at 35. but at 66 we know it. Q-"My husband is 70 and I am 68. He is an invalid. I work for rich people in house work. The time is fast coming when I won't be able to earn the extra income we need in addition to our Social Security checks. Is there any program anywhere that could help us earn that extra income so that we can survive? Cecelia K. A-Yes. Supplementary Security Income. Cecelia would do best to contact Social Security in her city. The phone number there is 622-7301. Q~"What can we oldsters do to make sure our supplementary insurance is of value and will pay off what we believe it should?" Randolph C. A-Some elderly experts on insurance could tackle the problem. Why not organize in each community a committee of elders who are retired insurance people? Those experts could study, as a group, the various kinds of policies issued by companies whose activities and pay-outs have been questioned, check generally into all types of in surance for the elderly and then make a sensible, easily un derstood report available to all of us. Such committees could get a start with encouragement from the local council on aging, or from some of the senior clubs. Perhaps this is an idea whose time has come. Let the elderly protect the elderly. general yui IOI a i News High school" youths arrested for possession of cannabis Plalndealer news service Two local high school youths were arrested last week on possession of cannabis charges.
