County Health department provides lab services The McHenry County Department of Health provides laboratory services as a com ponent of the Envirnonmental Health Division. The laboratory is certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health to perform bacteriological analyses on potable water and surface water. Analyses are performt private and public water sup plies as well as lakes, streams, rivers and ponds. Over 15,0000 water tests were run by our laboratory during the past year. Home owners, commercial enterprises or municipal public water supplies may request water tests at a fee to cover the cost of providing the service. Tests which the laboratory normally run on drinking water include analyses for Coliform and Nitrate. The Coliform bacteria are indicators that the water supply may have been exposed to contamination from r animal or man. Nitrate levels above 10 parts per million are potentially harmful to young childen and pregnant women. As a part of the analyses run on lakes, streams, rivers and Department of Health litarians collect samples swimming beaches each between Memorial Day and Labor Day. These results are recorded and reported to the news media to alert the public as to the conditions at the beaches and whether or not they should go swimming. The Coliform bacteria are divided into Total Coliform and Fecal Coliform. The Total Coliform iiicludes some bacteria which are comiriUhly found in the soil and are indications of runoff, whereas the Fecal Coliform are those of the type coming from the intestinal tract of warm blooded animals and man. If it is desirable to know if the pollution found in a body of water is of human or animal origin, the laboratory also tests for Fecal Streptococcus and makes a ratio between the amount of Fecal Coliform and Fecal Strep in the sample which gives an indication as to the source of the pollution. It must be remembered that the appearance of water does not give a reliable indication or its sanitary quality or safety. Sparkling clear water may contain the germs which cause disease. Therefore, home owners should have their well water analyzed a minimum of once a year. Drinking water should be free of Coliform bacteria and have Nitrate levels of less than 10 par^s per million. People wishing to have their well analyzed, should obtain a sterile bottle from the McHenry County Department of Health as well as instructions for collection of the sample. Anyone having questions regarding their water supply should feel free to contact the McHenry County Department of Health at (815) 338-2040, extension 120.
