Spring Home Living (B) April 25.1984 Page 8 Art Deco look returns to interiors Home decorating and interior design this year is full of variety and mixed tastes for different likes. "The fad or trend this year seems to be swaying towards the post-modern, which means, going with columns and using an updated Neoclassic and com bination Art Deco look," Lynne Wickham, owner of Wickham Interior in Crystal Lake, said. Henry Parker from Ackermann's Furniture Galleries said, "People are using more Neoclassic which in corporates soft lines." Wickham adds, "It is a geometric look. It's sleek and slick. It uses a lot of mirrors and brass". According to Wickham, with the exit of the trendy 'high-tech' look, when peo ple were painting steel with bright col ors, using chrome steel shelving, and using drafting lamps in their livin rooms, there is a comeback from the ol era. "Art Deco design period was brought about in the 1920's and 30's, and now it's making its return in a little more modern way. It seems people are pay ing more for it now than they did then," she said. In addition, Country French which has been very popular is staying popular and not fading out of the pic ture. "COUNTRY FRENCH IS still a fad, but I think it has more lasting value and is a better choice for people," Wickham said. Parker said, "The trend I see more of is that families and people are much more conscious of their homes. That's because they're spending more leisure time in them." "They're utilizing their living rooms- more than before and some are even turning those rooms into libraries or dens. The family areas or family rooms, which I have renamed the 'family living center', is a room people are really making the most of," Parker explained. For a young couple just starting out, Wickham advises the couple to stay with the contemporary look. They should purchase furniture with the longest life value. She suggests to mix old furniture items with new ones, which is an acceptable practice today but wasn't a while back. Parker added, "People are utilizing their old furnishings by mixing them with new pieces. Designers are break ing rules these days very skillfully." Wickham said, "I don't usually func tion with furniture fads and trends and I feel most interior designers don't either. I would never suggest that anyone buy 'trendy' furniture because it's just too expensive," Wickham said. J PARKER EXPLAINS, "TODAY, society is decorating practically and casually as well as elegantly." Wickham said, "Furnitures and win dow treatments should be investments that pay off for at least ten years." The colors that are making their way into modern homes this year are the jewel tones. Those colors include: emerald green, deep purple, ruby, tur quoise, golden brass, apricot, and others. "People are slowly pulling away from pastels and looking towards rich, royal colors. They're using colors and fabrics that make them feel senuous," Wickham said. "They're using more silks and natural fibers. Cotton is being used more becuase it is comfortable and pric ed reasonably," Wickham added. Parker said, "They're using beiges and spicing them up with bright colors." Dave Gould, store manager for Lloyd's Paint in Woodstock said, "Sten cilling is predominate." "Jewel tones are trendy and people are fulling away from the golds and olives," he said. "Blues are gaining more popularity and so are some ear- thtones and neutrals. People are also us ing darker backgrounds." "PEOPLE ARE WALLPAPERING more and can change the complexion of a medium sized room inexpensively for approximately $50 to $75 on a medium sized room," Gould said. Wickham explained, "People are us ing interior designers more today to save them money so they don't make mistakes. A lot of times people put things together on their own and find out later that something is the matter because it just doesn't look right. Those people take the middle of the road ap proach and then they wonder why it just isn't them." "If people want to go the do it yourself route, I feel they should still consult an interior designer first. They can still save money and they'll find that sometimes I can get the things they want just as cheap from the The Mer chandise Mart," Wickham added. Wickham suggest if people are look ing towards cost cutting and do it yourself interior designing they should consult magazines such as "House B e a u t i f u l , " " H o m e " , a n d "Metropolitan Home".
