The report, based on data sub mitted by 187 placement offices at 162 participating colleges, said businesses dispatching recruiters to academic turf believe the rest of 1984 looks good for the economy. "Expectations are that inflation will remain relatively low, the GNP will continue to grow, and many companies will show signifi cant profits," the report said. Placement directors told the survey that the number of employers interviewing on cam pus has increased. "In some cases interview schedules are full," the report said. "Likewise, employers report that competition is heightening as the recruiting year progresses." This year's salary offers don't show much change from last year's levels. For example, new petroleum engineers, are being of fered a few dollar under the July 1983 figure-$2,568. Offers for chemical engineering graduates are pegged at $2,273 monthly, up 2 percent over July 1983. Computer science majors are being coaxed with $2,004 month salaries, up 3.3 percent over last July's. By comparison, the average m o n t h l y s a l a r y o f f e r e d humanities graduates stands at $1,339, down 3 percent over the comparable figure for July 1983. Linda M. Pengilly, council in formation specialist, said the survey documented 14,510 job of fers made in March, nearly a 35 percent increase from the 10,831 made in March 1983. One significant difference with the current job recruitment up turn, compared with previous ones, is the relatively unchanged salary offers, the study said. "Companies just pulling out of lean times are unwilling or unable to increase starting rates," said the report from the Bethlehem, Pa., national association for career planning, placement and recruitment. "They also recognize that there is a pool of new graduates anxious for jobs. This year's graduates, having witnessed the effects of the recession on recent classmates, have more modest expectations. as CREATIVE LAWN CARE CREATIVE LAWN CARE WILL KEEP YOUR LAWN GREEN AND WEED-FREE ALL SEASON LONG FOR LESS THAN YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!
