SECTION 2-PAGE8 - PLAINDEALEE- FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 1984 FBgeneral News Speaking of Soaps Update on daily serials Spring field trips set by Audubon Society Each year the McHenry County Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society celebrates spring with a series of field trips. While birds are high on their list of priorities, most of the outings are just as interesting to the wildflower lover as to the birder. These trips are not limited to the membership; all interested persons are invited to participate. The first trip, scheduled for Saturday, April 28, will be a visit to Trout Park Nature Preserve in Elgin. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schultz will lead the group. There will be plenty of birds for birders and wild flowers for .others. Access to the park can be made via Route 25. Coming from the north, go over the toll road and proceed to Trout Park Boulevard. Turn right on Trout Park Boulevard and continue to the park en trance. The walk will start from the park entrance at 8:30 a.m. On Thursday, May 3, Darlene Fiske will hold a workshop on learning to identify bird songs. Once the leaves come out, the songs and calls are very helpful in identifying the elusive birds, according to an Audubon spokesman. This workshop will be held in the office of the McHenry County Defenders, located in Central School on Paddock Street, Crystal Lake. On Saturday, May 12, the chapter will visit Pike Marsh in Moraine Hills State Park. Pike Marsh is composed of ap proximately 115 acres in the southeast portion of the park. The marsh features sharply contrasting plant communities with an outer zone of fen. This area contains several rare plants and also supports a large colony of pitcher plants. To reach the marsh, go east through McHenry on Route 120. Immediately after crossing the Fox River, turn south on River Road. Continue past McHenry Dam Road to the parte entrance. Once inside the park, go to the first parking lot on the right, the starting point for the walk. The outing will be under the leadership of Anne Carroll and will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Saturday, May 19 trip will have as its destination the McHenry County Conservation District site known as the Hollows. "Hiis site is located between Crystal Lake and Cary on Route 14 and is just west of the Algonquin Township office. Tlie area offers good op portunities for birding, especially water birds around the lakes. Also, the woodland area should provide good bir ding as well as wildflower viewing. Darlene Fiske will lead the group which will meet in the parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Culminating the spring schedule Saturday, May 26 will be a tour of Babcock Woods, located between McHenry and Woodstock off Bull Valley Road. This wooded area furnishes one of the best selections of wild flowers anywhere in the county. Birds are also abundant there. Babcock Woods is privately- owned and is open to visitors only under authorized leader ship. The group will meet at the home of Darlene Fiske, 9313 Bull Valley Road, at 8:30 a.m. Mrs. Fiske will conduct the tour. For further information about any of these trips, call Gill Moreland at (312) 639-4092.
