(CB8) NBA BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS ALL ABOARD -- Televising the Olympic Summer Games this year is presenting ABC with some prob­ lems that require creative solutions Herb Kraft, ABC's director of Telecommunica­ tions and Olympic Venues, has met some of the problems with such novelties as electric camera trucks, electric motorcycles and pontoon boats. Pontoon boats? What's so novel about pontoon boats? They'll be used to carry the cameras covering the Olympic canoe and rowing races at Lake Casita in California -- a lake with unique problems. First, the irregular shoreline makes it difficult to build a paved road where you can track a camera. Second, conditions make it necessary to televise in the morning, which means shore-bound cameras would be shooting into the sun. Third, if they shot from a regular boat, the camera vessel would create a wake that could disturb the rowers. Given this set of complications, Kraft's men designed a platform that rests on twin covered rac­ ing shells. The 10-foot camera platform sits atop the base, enabling the camera to get a high view of the eight lanes of rowers. The pontoon camera platform comes equipped with a captain and a second mate to guide its two 50-horsep(5wer motors and make sure the platform keeps up with the rowers. The captain will monitor the race via a headset connected with the ABC pro­ duction truck. To compensate for the roll of water, Kraft's men developed a gyroscopic mount to keep the cameras steady. "Otherwise," Kraft says, "viewers would feel seasick watching the coverage." ABC Sports will have two of these floating plat­ forms roaming up and down Lake Casitas -- with only eight minutes between races, both platforms will be needed to take turns chasing the rowers.
