i - j. Resignation spurs wrestling coach search, By Mike Lamb Plaindealer sports editor The search for It new wrestling head coach at McHenry High School has begun with the accepting of Marty Sobczak's coaching resignation by the District 156 school board meeting last week Tuesday. Sobczak mentioned family pressures and differences in philosophies from within the athletic department for sub mitting his resignation to the school board. Sobczak plana to stay ctft with McHenry high school as a physical education teacher. "I have been coaching 18 years now, and I had some family pressures to spend some more time with them," said the 42-year-old Sobczak. There were/ some indications that a change would do some good for the team. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize the team." Sobczak ended one of his better seasons at the Mcjfenry wrestling helm this past season. His squad finished with a 3-3 Fox Valley Record and placed fourth in the FVC title meet, hosted by the Warriors. His / squad's overall record stood at 11-7. Sobczak coached the Warrior wrestling squad for the past eight years. " ) According to McHenry High School athletic director Joe Schlender, the school is in the process of looking for Sobczak's successor. . "We're in the process of putting together a vacancy bulletin fpr all scholastic and athletic openings," Schlender said. "After that is finalized, £hen we will consider a suc cessor." Sobczak said he knows of a couple of good successors, one of which would be his assistant coach this past season, Jerry Rankin. * Whoever is hired to take over the wrestling coaching duties, Sobczak feels he has left them in pretty flood shape. "As f look at it right now, it (wrestling program) is one of the strongest programs - at least in northeast Illinois. I think we're on the verge of that. The junior high has been solidified," Sobczak said. Sobczak said it was a difficult decision to make, but it was one of the better alternatives. He has also been heavily active in the Teachers Association, which took up a great amount of time. He told his seniors of his decision before the winter1 sports award night at West Campus. He informed the rest of the squad and parents during the award night. v „ "I told the kids they are-oot getting rid of me," Said Sobczak. "I will still be around looking in on them during practices." Sobczak is not certain what the future holds for him. ftfr him. "I don't know at this point. I have no plans right now. I have made some contacts in the area about officiating." Sobczak came to McHenry in 1974, filling the wrestling head let 3 talk Marty Sobczak coaching position and freshman football coach. Previously, he coached and taught at Waukesha High School in Wisconsin. "I thank coach Sobczak for his 10-years of coaching services," said Schlendec* "I thank him for all the time he put in." y PREP LOG Water polo squad wins 2 of 3 The McHenry Warrior water polo team raised its record to 3-6 with two victories out of three games last week. Banaszynski raised his personal record also to 3-0. "Banaszynksi threw just 86 pitches and threw 54 for strikes. It was the best outing of the year for him," said Johnsburg coach Jim Meyers. "We played a good ballgame. I'm happy with the win." Johnsburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, with help of three walks. Bentz started the run-scoring rally with a single and stole second. WOODSTOCK from page 20 * quickly turned around and threw the ball mtofibg, UrfieJd. The field umpire, to the surprise of the McHenry squad and the people in the stands, ruled Harris had caught the ball and the inning over. By the time Harris had thrown the ball to the infield, two Warriors crossed the plate. Wilson protested the call, but it was useless, as protests on umpire judgement calls are not allowed in high school baseball. "The home plate umpire thought he (Harris) had caught the ball," said Wilson. The umpire that had made the call had apologized to Wilson after the game. "The umpire said he was out of position," Wilson added. Woodstock coach Ed Brucker also thought Harris made the catch at first. "From my angle, which was the same as the umpire, it seemed like it was an out. But the first tip that it wasn't was when he (Harris squealed around and threw the ball. Maybe the umpire should have waited," Brucker said. Brucker was very happy to sneak out of McHenry with the win. "McHenry is a good ballclub. We're lucky to get out of here with a win." With the umpire ruling wiping out the two runs in the second inning, the Warriors had to settle with single runs in the third and sixth innings. Tim Pankiewicz led off with a single in third, reaching second and third bases on wild pitches by Woodstock pitcher George Birdsell. Pankiewicz scored on a sacrifice fly by Kris Teuber. The fourth inning Warrior run was scored with one out. Mike Podpora singled and stole second. He scored when Craig Hill ripped a double into cen- terfield. "The kids hit the ball today. We haven't been doing that consistently," said Wilson. "Woodstock is a good ballclub. They don't make too many mistakes, and they don't give up too many walks . Birdsell only gave up three walks and four hits, while striking out two. In rare starting appearance, Ross Vehring went the distance for McHenry, giving up seven hits, three walks and striking out six. Vehring has , been used primarily in relief for McHenry. * Woodstock jumped on Vehring early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Bill Beaman led off with a double. After Vehring struckout Gregg Fields, Greg firadshaw singled home Beaman. Fields advanced to second on the same play on a throwing error. Fields then went to third on a wild pitch. He scored after Jeff Harris struckout and Birdsell singled. The Blue Streaks added two more runs in the fifth inning. Vehring walked Wes Cain to start off the inning. Cain then went to second on Vehring balk and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Beaman. Cain scored on Fields single. Bradshaw then doubled to centerfield, scoring Fields. 'Palace 3400 N.
