SECTION i-PAOfet-PUlNDEALfeft-WEDNESDAY, MAY 2, 1084 ^ • c ? ^PSgeneral News Local Rotary clubs buy boat for dive team Lead paper test kit offered for Clean Air Week The American Lung Association of DuPage and McHenry counties are spon soring Clean Air Week from May 7 to 13. The theme of Clean Air Week 1984 is "Tran sportation and Air Quality/' with special emphasis on fuel switching and car tampering. As part of Clean Air Week the Lung Association is making available a free brochure on fuel switching and a lead paper test kit, which provides a simple test to determine if your car has burned leaded gas. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency there are some gas stations across the country which' are selling leaded gasoline and representing DPto be unleaded. If a motorist suspects such fuel switching, this simple test is a good way to check. Clean Air Week is designed to focus public attention on the need to improve the air and to underline the importance of the federal government's Clean Air Act, which is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency. . Anyone wishing a copy of the free bro^iure and lead test paper or any other information write the American Lung Association of DuPage. and McHenry Counties, P.O. Box 590, Glen Ellyn, IL. 60138 or call the Woodstock office, 216 S.Throop St., Woodstock, 338- 6675. Five Rotary Clubs of McHenry County recently donated to the McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (MCESDA) a 19-foot boat equipped with a 85 horsepower engine, trailer, and all the equipment needed to assist the dive team in the rescuing of drowning victims. The boat will be used in conjunction with the MABAS Division Five Dive Team, which the ESDA divers af% members. MABAS is the mutual aid system that exists among the fire departments in northern Illinois. The unit was given to McHenry County during the annual District 644 Rotary In ternational Conference at the Americana Resort at Lake Geneva. A.B. McConnell, vice- chairman, and Chuck Weingart of the public safety committee of the McHenry County Board told the 800 in attendance how much they appreciated the efforts of the clubs. The project began in July, 1982, when Phil Bartmann, then president-elect of the McHenry Rotary, was approached by the MCESDA director, John J. Shay. A shift in procedure of rescuing drown victims instead of recovering bodies had emerged due to the fact that research had shown where victims coujld be revived if they had been in the water for up to 40 minutes. Fast action was needed and at that time the rescue boats were coming from Lake County. The project, which was estimated to cost around $10,000, was too large for one club. Bartmann contacted the other four clubs at Cary Grove, Crystal Lake, Richmond,, and Woodstock who pooled their resources to secure the boat. They accepted the project because it was in line with the crfic and humanitarian ac tivities that Rotary Clubs are known to participate. Dick Budny of Lombard, who is the governorof the Rotary International District, stated that this is the first time to his knowledge, that five local clubs got together for a local project. Also present at the acceptance was Glenn Peterson, chief of the McHenry Township Fire . Protection District and a member of the McHenry County Fire Chiefs Dive Team Com mittee. He stated that the boat would be housed at Station two of his fire district ̂ and would automatically respond to a drowning anywhere in McHenry County. John J. Shay, director of MCESDA, gave his appreciation to all the five clubs for their efforts, and accepted the boat on behalf of the dive team. He said the dive team looked forward to the day t^iat drowning victims would be sent to a hospital and later be walking the streets instead of to a mortuary. He said when that day occurs the Rotary, Clubs of McHenry County will share in the teams joy and know they assisted in saving a life.
