SECTION 1 - PAGE 14 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 2, 1984 ^ H general News Netherlands, U.S. compared in drug and alcohol abuse New Adult Community Band formed Northern Illinois Musicians will join this summer to form the Adult Community Band in Crystal Lake. The band will be under the direction of Dale Johannsen, retired U.S. Army bandmaster with extensive experience in conducting and teaching. Johannsen's x bands have traveled throughout the United States, Germany and Korea. He was associate bandmaster of the U.S. Military Academy Band, West Point, before joining Karnes Musie Company. The Community Band will rehearse each Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at North Junior High School beginning June 5, 1984. It will play a variety of concerts throughout the year. The band isopen to all Nor thern Illinois residents of college age or older, who have some instrumental experience and are interested in continuing their talents. Registration may be done by mail or in person at Crystal Lake Park District office located at 300 Lake Shore Dr. in Crystal Lake. PHONE (312)587-4646 Two men from the Netherlands who work in alcohol and substance abuse programs recently visited the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County. ~ » • _ Sara Boomhower, director of the family alcohol-substance abuse program for Family Service, discussed the McHenry County program with Paul van Bilsen, a psychologist, and Jan Wagemakers, psychologist and principal at a college in Gemert., The two men were in McHenry, one stop during a Rotary Group Study Exchange between Rotary clubs in nor theastern Illinois and the Netherlands. Six men, led by Wagemakers, are in the United States for six weeks. The stop at McHenry enabled the men to seek persons in .their own professions. Several similarities in the way alcohol and substance abuse is treated in the two countries were noted. Van Bilsen said the Netherlands approach includes individual, group therapy and family treatment, similar to p r o g r a m s B o o m h o w e r described. Van Bilsen believes the Netherlands needs more education concerning drugs as a "normal part of the , school program." Van Bilsen said research data shows France to be the country with the highest percentage of alcoholic .consumption per capita. The Nethherlands ranks 17th, the United States l&h, in the compilation he cited. The drinking age in the Netherlands is 16. Heroin is the main drug abuse problem in the Netherlands, he said. Boomhower said her experience indicates cocaine and marijuana are the most abused drugs in McHenry County, in addition to alcohol. Penalties for drunken driving in the Netherlands are con sistent, Van Bilfen saying all drunken drivers are referred to the drug-alcohol abuse program.
