The status of 51-year-old Therese Taylor, of Diego, has been upgraded - serious condition. "She's much better," a Northern Tlinois Medical Center '(McHenry Hospital) spokesman said. Taylor is more responsive than she was FYiday, the day after she was hit by an early evening commuter train pulling into the Crystal Lake depot, according to the spokesman. "She's still in intensive care," Crystal Lake Police Sgt. Keith Nygren said. "Apparently she's going to make it." Police said Monday they were as yet unable to determine why she was crossing the tracks. Nygren said Crystal Lake police may be able to interview Taylor Tuesday. •' Taylor was hit and pinned under the engine of the train Thursday as she crossed; the wooden walkway about 6 p.m. The engine driver applied the emergency brake as the train approached her at between 10 and 15 miles per hour, police said. She was freed from beneath the engine by Crystal Lake paramedics. They rushed her, conscious but unresponsive, *to Northern Illinois Medical Center. She suffered what paramedics called severe scalp injuries. By Kirk Birgtaal Plaindealer news service I Four families escaped injury early Saturday as one of the largest.fires in Crystal Lake in two years destroyed a hardware store in the downtown business district. Hampered by strong south winds, 45 firefighters from four departments battled the fire at Downtown Hardware, 60 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake, for two hours before containing the blase, said Lt. Rick Netpl, s Crystal Lake Fire-Rescue Squad. Chemical containers ex ploding during the fire further complicated ^firefighters' ef forts. "We could have lost the rest of the block," Nebel said. , Units remained on the scene until 6:30 p.m. Saturday and returned twice during the night to extinguish smalljfires smoldering under the <nMNs. The cause of the fire -and where it broke out are still beinjg, investigated, fire officials said. Dan Malone, owner of the hardware building, said loss from the fire was "totJU" although he could not give' an estimate. "The fire department did a magnificent job. If they hadn't gotten there, odds are a let more buildings would have been destroyed," Malone said. "The wind was extremely strong and the fire was just awesome." He said he plans to rebuild the store, hopefully by fall of this year. "Downtown has been a part of our life for a long time, and it will continue to be," Malone said. ^ Firemen were called to the scene at 1:12 a.m. after being notified by Crystal Lake Police. An employee of the hardware store, who lived on the second floor, awoke after smelling smoke and called police, ac cording to Malone. He said residents living in four apartments above the store, about eight to 10 people, left the building or were evacuated by police, i A v The building was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived and they immediately requested assistance from the Cary, McHenry and Nunda Rural fire departments, Nebel said. "Within minutes, it was roaring," Nebel said. Cryfetal Lake's snorkel unit helped control the fire in front and Caiy's "telesqdirt" unit, \ similar to s snorkel, was flsed at ttie rear of the building. At the heiglrt of the blaze, more than 4,000 gallons of water per minute were poured on the fire, Nebel said. * The fire, along with the collapse of the roof onto the second and first' floors, destroyed everything except the north section of the building which was gutted but still standing, Nebel said. The facade of one section of the 1>uilding left standing was torn down for safety reasons, MbImip said Nebel said two adjoining stores, Gunter's Clothing and Athlete's Niche Ltd., were heavily damaged by smoke and water.
