I Annual Meeting Milestone % Large Crowd Participates More than 500 people attended the Memorial Hospital Corporation annual meeting in January, reflecting the all-time membership high of 1,315 members. , Lee Pesce, executive director, discussed efforts at cost containment, summarizing-, "We are a social-oriented institution but we must operate in a business context. Financial constraints are a dominant factor." State Senator Jack Schaffer, featured speaker at this 70th annual meeting, said community hospital officials must become involved in the legislative process becausfe Illinois General Assembly membersare "bombarded with powerful groups" urging them to do something about the big increase in Public Aid expenditures. "These groups form a formidable coalition to obtain responsible and rational results," said Schaffer. "I don't want the government to practice medicine by legislation but it could if people responsible for health services do not participate in the development of legislation." He urged Memorial Hospital officials to make sure the views of the smaller hospitals are expressed before General Assembly committees although he acknow- leged the Illinois Hospital Association is a good spokes man.
