The project is designed to find out if working on a computer role-playing game as a group will help problem-solving skills for families, the 1975 graduate of Harvard High School said. Davy is looking for three families to play the game "Wizardry" two hours a week for six weeks at Rathbun Computer Service, which is f providing a computer and office space for the project Families with children should not be larger than five people. Children need to be at least 8- years-old. Confidentiality is guaranteed, Davy said. The families will* fill out a series of simple questions before beginning the games. They will fill out the questionnaires again when tbe games are over. "I measure their ability to solve problems before, then after," he said. 'Til be looking to see,if they get better at it.*' Wizardry was selected because it is one of the few available role-playing games that lets the player design his character, Davy said. There are several characters to choose from. "The game works through simple keyboard answers," Davy said. "They're free to play the game and do what they want to do." By working together on a task, even if it is just a game, McHENRY COUNTRY CLUB invites you to fine dining at MchENRY'S MOST BEAUTIFUL LOCATION --Wed. thru Sat. evenings beginning at 5p.m. --Luncheon served from Tues. thru Sat. at 11a.m.. -Live entertainment every weekend from 8p.m. Spate is Limited Reservations are advised McHENRY COUNTRY CLIIB EXPERIENCE US! 20 N.John 1385-1072 . theoretically it should improve a family's Nability to solve problems. "Right now, I don't know whether it will prove it," Davy said. "It just may prove not to be there at all." If a positive correlation exists, Davy believes computer games may have applicationsin family therapy. "Then it wotHcHje a simple method for • use," he said. "It would be non invasive." Using a computer in this sort of project is fairly innovative. The normal method is to have a person interview subjects or operate the research. This way the bias of the researcher is limited. "There's no way to guarantee he is treating each family exactly the same," Davy said. "(Using the computer) is more of an analytical way of doing it. To my knowledge this hasn't been used much." If the computer role-playing game proves to help families, Davy plans to conduct a similar research project for a management team to complete his business administration degree. "Most people see research as a dry thing," Davy said. "For what I'm doing in my field, people is the thing. If I'm going to do research, I shouldn't be sitting in the library, I should be out with people." To prepare for the project, Davy read everything that has been written on role-playing games* He then wrote a proposal, which his professor approved. He then wrote more submitted it to another professor who required five revisions ih the project before he would approve it. Then the project was submitted to a human affairs review board, which determines if the project complies with all ethical standards for live research. Another part of the pro|ect will be to have the research published in a professional journal. To volunteer for the project, call Davy at 388-9107 or leave a message at Rathbun Computer Service at 943-6144. Davy hopes to begin the project as soon as possible.
