By Cliff Ward Plaindealer News Service They started as a group of Vietnam veterans talking over their problems with one of their own. Today, a little more than a year later, they are a growing organization finding solutions for men who participated in America's most misunderstood war. The McHenry County chapter of VietNow - which is "growing by leaps and bounds," according to the chapter president - recently celebrated an an niversary. The chapter that began as a group of veterans talking over their problems with Alan Belcher, a psychologist who is also a Vietnam veteran, has grown today to 93 members. That's more than double the number when President Jack Wojewoda took the reins last June. Despite a full year, Wojewoda, who was re-elected president this week, said the local Viet Now still has a way to go." "There are 4*500 (Vietnam vets) in McHenry Cbunty," he said. "Lots of them don't want to get involved with any organ ization." ' But getting involved with VietNow involves more than just swapping war stories, he said. That's the difference, he said, between VietNow and older veteran's groups like the VFW and the American Legion, which Wojewoda said are both "honorable and worthwhile" but more socially-oriented. However, relations between the older groups and VietNow have somewhat improved. This week's meeting, set for St. John's Church hi Woodstock, was in danger of cancellation because of a power outage until Dwayne Raney, a local World War n veteran active in the VFW and the Legion, allowed VietNow to meet at the Wood stock VFW hall. VietNow wants to help troubled vets, vets with marital, drinking or delayed stress problems, or vets who have been exposed to Agent Orange, the dioxin-based defoliant used in Indochina to deprive Com munist guerrillas of cover. The group coordinates free screenings for Agent Orange and the local chapter has been in the forefront of the fight against the Illinois Agent Orange Study Commission, which Wojewoda and others feel is little more than a patronage dumping ground. Above all, VietNow offers camaraderie, Wojewoda said. "I can call any of these guys day or night for help, and I know they'll be there," he said. ^ That feeling of belonging has been a big factor for some vets who had no outlet when they returned home. "We need to get more vets," Wojewoda said. He said disseminating information and help to Vietnam veterans is more important to him than membership totals. One vet at this week'smeeting said VietNow has' made Km aware of what rights he has as a veteran. "I, personally, didn't want to be involved aj^fhore '̂ after coming home from a war nobody cared about, he said. That feeling, and one that Vietnam veterans "lost the war,"' still bothers many veterans. "In our eyes, we won; the government lost," Wojewoda said. "We never a battle, but we lost the war. Wojewoda and other vets said that attitudes about Vietnam vets ajte slowly starting to and public functions low has been involved with have helped to change part of their image; to show that "not everyone here is nuts and crazy," as one vet said. VietNow plans to take parkin a number of trade fairs and expos throughout the county and will march in the Woodstock Memorial Day parade^on May 28. "Now when we march, people are starting to applaud and say *hey, alright,' " the'vet said. "We are not fprgotten."
