Today, I would like to talk about childhood fcxjisoning from both prescription and over-the- counter drugs. Any drug, if taken in excess, - may cause a toxic reaction. The strength of medicines is most often based on adult dosages, and even a small quantity of an adult dose can poison a child. Just a week or two ago, it was announced that in 1973, prior to legislation that requires child- resistant packaging, ingestion of prescription drugs by children under five accounted for 4,180 hospital visits nationally. In 1981 -- eight years after passage of the Act - the number had dropped to 2,688. Child-resistant packaging isn't the whole answer, however. Although we might recognize that the child- resistant closures are important and necessary, we sometimes get so provoked with trying to remove a safety cap that we to seal it after we've used the drug.
