SECTION 2'- PAGE 16 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, 1984 News HI Local VFW, Legion urge public to wear poppies Sale set to benefit nursing home Valley Hi Nursing Home, Hartland, is celebrating 100 'years of service to McHenry County. They are in the process of building a new wing that will provide 25 more beds, and on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Women's Auxiliary for Valley Hi will hold/a Cen­ tennial Sale to raise^tfllney for the furnishing of a room of the new wing. Donations of sale items or monetary gifts would be ap­ preciated. Many prizes will be given away. On Saturday, May 12, Poppy Day will be observed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 and the American Legion Post 491 and their respective Ladies Auxiliaries. * Two different poppies will again be offered to the public. One is the Veterans of Foreign Wars Buddy Poppy' and the other is the American^Legion 'Memorial Poppy'. Both will be providing aid to a veteran. He may be in a veterans ad­ ministration hospital or in this community. Poppies are assembled in the veterans administration hospitals, domicillaries and state veterans' homes by the veterans. In many instances the assembly is used as part of a therapy program to provide exercise for fingers and hands crippled by wounds, disease and the effects of old age. In some instances, it is used as a step of toward rehabilitation psychiatric patients. The funds received from the poppy sales provide care for the deceased veterans' widow and children at the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich. It also provides funds for veterans' rehabilitation, pays for direct relief to the families of needy and deceased veterans. Edith Reinage and Ceil Violett, poppy chairman for the Ladies auxiliaries to the local posts, urge the citizens of McHenry and surrounding areas to wear a poppy in memory of the men who gave their lives. The program begins at 7 p.m. with a performance by students from local parochial junior high schools, directed by Mrs. Jerri Mikus. At 7:30 the McHenry West Jazz Band, directed by Mr. Jqhn Leighty will perform, followed at 8 p.m. with the-McHenry East Jazz Band, W.N. Toalson director. At 8:30 the M.C.C. Jazz Band will perform under the leadership of Mr. Mike Bazan. The McHenry City Band will begin at 9 p.m. under the direction of Mr. W.N. Toalson. Admission is free.
