One would have to believe Warrior baseball player Steve Cunningham was a good student way back in his little league days. It was because he learned good that Cunningham ended up being the hero in a 7h6 win over Dundee-Crown- last Monday. Facing the Chargers ace pitcher, Todd Mitter, Cun ningham just made contact. His blooper into rightfield scored Kevin Moore from third base for the Winning run. "I was pretty relaxed," said the junior infielder. "I was just thinking to get a piece of it. He threw a fastball and I just hit it." "I saw it going over the second baseman's head into rightfield. But the rightfielder had a chance to throw me out." Although Mitter has a good fastball, that doesn't bother Cunningham. "I look for somebody who can throw pretty hard. I felt pretty confident when I went up there the last time." Although only batting .214 in the Fox Valley Conference and .250 in non-conference games, he has been platooned at second base for most of the season. It was only recently, with the emergence of Cunningham's good contact hitting, that McHenry coach Brian Wilson started Cunningham at short stop. "He's a contact hitter," said Wilson. "I did have him backing up at second base, but I decided to start him at shortstop. He will be splitting duty there with Chris Vehring." Wilson also mentioned three important sacrifice hits he has come up with the last couple games. Cunningham said he has more confidence playing second base, but he is just glad to be playing in more games. Steve is the son of John and Elana Cunningham. Steve Cunningham ATHLETE of the week PANTHERS 'HAND continued from page 18 The Skyhawks came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead. Adams lead-off the inning with a single, while Dale Zalke struckout. Jayko then slugged a deep liner into centerfield, knocking in Adams. Jayko, cruised into second base. Peeucci followed with a walk, but Jim Olekszv hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Jayko out at third base. Preston came up with another deep fly ball to centerfield for a double, knocking in both Pecucci and Olekszy. Jim Bentz kept the rally going when he was hit by a pitch. The rally quickly ended on a double steal attempt. Preston was cut- down at home plate on a close call. Johnsburg's hopes for a win disappeared in the sixth inning. Round Lake batted through the lineup in scoring five runs to take a 8-5 lead. The Panthers closed the door completely on the Skyhawks with seven runs in the seventh. Johnsburg did add a run in the TANNERY 5101 W.
