SECTION 2 - PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER -.FRIDAY...MAY Pioneer Center views progress at anniversary observance Sobering warnings amid the satisfaction and joy of a 25th anniversary celebration marked the annual meeting of the McHenry County Association for the Retarded last weekend. Robert Lambourn, executive director of the McHenry-based association, since 1967, praised the 275 guests for their dedication and support of the developmentally disabled through 25 years, but added: '"Hie need for new sources of revenue to sustain our current programs is challenging and serious." "Hie association must con centrate on increasing sources of revenue such as con tributions, fund-raising events, subcontract work and client fees if it is to maintain the current level and quality of services." "Fund-raising efforts must nearly double to meet the needs we currently face. We will feel the consequence of limited fluids from governmental entities next year and we look to members to renew their activities to sustain our programs." Lambourn revealed several suggestions he will present the board of directors, including an evaluation of existing fee structures and a reorganization of existing programs with an emphasis on the business aspect of rehabilitation. Dixie Hogan, president, said "hard work by staff and volunteers" has provided the growing number of programs for the mentally and physically disabled. Five directors were re-elected for two-year terms each: Bruce Smyth, Dixie Hogan and Dick Campobello, Crystal Lake; MichaelLanphier,Harvard; and Elyse Roberts, Barrington Hills. Several volunteers were recognized for their service to Pioneer Center clients: Maggi Miller, Maritza Brenizer, Bob Gensler, Milton and Cleon Engebretson, Kathy Maredo, Kristy Aldridge, Hope Martin, Marguerite Baumann and Rev. Kenneth Ahlstrand, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church at Woodstock. Mrs. Roberta Wiltse, director of program development for Pioneer Center, said Grace Lutheran Church members have united to provide many services, in cluding transportation for clients. : Two programs of Pioneer Center have been in effect for 10 years each, and directors of those departments were presented certificates of recognition: Tom Gollan, director of day care services, and Connee Meschini, director of residential services. Ten employees were recognized for their years of service: Kathy Thomas, bus driver, 15 years; Jan Bartmann, training specialist; Ruth Drye, nurse; Tom Gollan, Day Service director; and Linda Sweeney, bus driver 10 years each, and Cindy Bean, CLF caseworker; Cathy Csech, Group Home program manager; Patty Christopher, business office secretary; Joy Landre, production program manager; and Paul Nelsestuen, vocational development program mahager, five years each. Tbey had no money, no meeting place, no en couragement from anyone, and discouragement from official sources. After a year, the children showed remarkable-"! improvement. It was miraculous how one day a week of having the children together helped them after a year of perseverance.
