LOCAL continued from page believes nuclear power has played the scapegoat. "Three Mile Island hurt us," Smith acknowledged. Smith defended nuclear reactors as "pollution free," but argued that a govern ment commitment to en sure safe, permanent disposal of nuclear wastes in the future is necessary. Underground sites must be found, he said. "No one wants it in their backyard," Smith said. "It's really shortsighted on the part of everybody." Smith is loyal to ComEd down to his hard hat and shares his company's concern about obtaining permission to operate the new plant, which has been a controversial issue lately. "Right now, my future is getting that license," Smith said. "That is uppermost in PAGE 11 - PLAINDEALER^WEDNESDAY, MAY It, 1W4 Police tickets Hie City of McHenry Police Department has issued the following citations. Mildred W. Snively, 709 S. Unit II is 69 percent finished. "You're guilty until you prove yourself innocent," Smith said about nuclear power plants. "That's not the American way of life." Smith isn't the type who brings his problems home, said Rita, his wife of 34 years. That's his time to work on the house they're building piece-by-piece on Crystal Lake, play tennis or raquetball, or listen to classical music. "I'm what you call a satisfied employee," Smith said. He prefers to stay out of the limelight and just go about his business. Smith, as well as anyone, reflects the ComEd motto: "Doing things right." mai, zone. W. DUI1 LAW FOR from page . Ammunition shell found (Plaindealer photo by Mike Lamb) Two Wonder Lake youths found a 105 mm howitzer shell near their home when they were playing "war games" Sunday afternoon. Kane County explosive experts determined the shell, in the center of the photograph, to be live but had to wait for Army officials to arrive to remove it. It was not determined how the shell got into the area. because they had beer with them. By and large, law en forcement officials will admit that drinking is an accepted part of boating, but they also point to the inherent dangers. "Of course it's a danger. I don't think it's any different than in a motor vehicle," Nulle said. County board member George W. Lowe, Jr., also noted the need for something to be done. "The accidents are hap pening," Lowe said. He com mented that another reason he favored some enforcement was from a pollution aspect. "I've seen people with ump teen beer cans simply throw them overboard," Lowe said. Is McHenry County moving toward any type of stricter law? "I haven't heard of anything in McHenry County," Nulle said. "If Lake County does something, I would assume that McHenry County would too." Lowe, a former chairman of the public safety committee and present chairman of the legislative committee, echoed those sentiments. Dawn M. Grether, 1018 Lincoln Road, no v registration. Cynthia L.
