SECTION t - PAGE § - PLAINDEALER -WEDNESDAY. MAY it. 1984 Double coupon days are a bargain, but have their limits, too By Jum Fuller Dear June: Two of my favorite stores offered to double the value of manufacturers' coupons. I had two coupons, each offering a free, trial-sue bottle of Jhirmack shampoo or conditioner, or 59 cents off any larger size. Unfortunately, neither store carried the trial sixes of either product. So, I selected a larger size and ex pected the cashier to double the coupon and deduct $1.18 from the purchase price. To my surprise, the cashier said she could not double the value of the coupon because it was a "free product" coupon. She said the stores' double coupon rules had a restriction against free product coupons. The same thing happened at the second supermarket. What do you think about this? Should these stores have doubled the 59-cent value marked on each coupon? - Nancy Andrus, Wichita Falls, Texas. Dear Nancy: Most super markets consider free, trial-size coupons to be free product coupons, even if they contain a cents-off value for a larger size. When stores offer a double coupon promotion, their in tention is really to give you the bonus of the second discount for the typical cents-off coupons you find in newspapers or magazines. I have spoken to many supermarket managers who would like to offer their customers double coupons, but they aren't sure how to go about it. Here are some tips I have asked them to consider: -Try it for one day. Do it on the slowest day of the week so it is an incentive for people to shop early. Try offering it to senior citizens who may have a special need for the extra discount. -Try limiting the value of the coupons you will double. For instance, you can state that your store will double the value of Springs, Tenn: "The regular price of Wrangler jeans at our local T.G. ItY. store is $14.88, but they recently had them on sale for only 88.87. They were also offering triple coupons, and I had two $2 Wrangler coupons! It was unbelievable. I got those jeans for only $2.87 a pair - and I didn't have to wrangle (or the bargain." I believe it is better that a store have a good experience with double coupons, and con tinue to offer them periodically, than take a beating and forever swear them off. Double coupons can be a good promotion for both the store and consumers if it .is understood and handled properly.
