Two youngsters sample formula and "gown up" for a visit to the birthing room as a mother helps prepare her child for her new role as a sibling. For information oil the free class, call 385-2200, extension 560. NIMED plans sibling class Sunday, May 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.mM a special class for children expecting a new brother or sister will be offered at Northern Illinois Medical Center. Called the "Very Important Sibling Class," the program is designed tb help children between three and ten years of age understand their role during their special time in a family's life. Children learn what happens when an expectant mother goes to the hospital to deliver their new baby. The program highlights the sibling's im portance, encourages bonding, eases a child's fears through education and works to reduce sibling rivalry. The children tour the maternity department, labor room, delivery area, and the nursery. A special film strip is featured, and the youngsters also watch a bath and care demonstration, practice diapering and holding a baby doll, and learn how to bottle feed a baby. They also listen to their own heartbeat and see how it is monitored in the labor room. During their tour of the delivery room they receive surgical foot covers, a mask and a hat. The class concludes with a visit to the kind of room their mother Agency encourages public to adopt pets will be in, and then a visit to the obstetrics kitchen for milir and cookies. Following the class, each child receives a certificate, a coloring book, and a V.I.S. tee shirt. These classes will be presented quarterly, following the family- centered prenatal classes, and will be held on Sunday af ternoons. They are offered free of charge as another community service of Northern Illinois Medical Center. The hospital dining room is the location for the class. For further in formation and to register, call 38&-2200, extension 560. By Deborah Collura Plaindealer news service Now that it is spring, there are plenty of offspring from dogs and cats. Helping Paws is encouraging people to adopt a new member of the family because, according to the group, "pets and people are good for each other." Helping Paws is a chartered organization which provides, when possible, foster homes for stray and injured domestic animals until they can find an adoption home. Helping Paws is licensed by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a humane society. The association has weekly columns in which they offer foster home and pets for adoption in five newspapers. This year's goal is to find a location for a pet "halfway house." The association' s dream is to find five acres for a shelter. The facility would be used to temporarily house dogs and cats in a home-like en vironment until someone adopts them. When a person adopts a pet, there is a $35 donation fee for spaying or neutering a dog and a 620 fee for cats. The fees pay the veterinarian costs. The animal is free. "From January through May, 25 pets have been spayed and neutered for people who can't afford it," secretary Florence Cass said. The person adopting the pet must meet some standards set by the association and sign a contract with certain requirements so that Helping Paws knows the pet will have a good home. Helping Paws also gives the dog or cat being adopted a numbered tag with Helping Paws' number on it so if the animal is lost, it can be returned to its owner, often within 24 hours. According to Florence Cass, secretary, the latest figures available show that in 1980-81, Helping Paws found homes for 63 dogs and 140 cats. "Twice the number of animals are homed than are repor ted... andmore animals are homed every year because there are more of them," Cass said. Besides "Tag Days," Helping^ Paws also holds bazaars esnA% bake sales and has an animal- ® oriented gift shop at the office, 465 Virginia St., to raise money. Other services provided by the association include having volunteers take puppies and kittens to nursing homes for the day. They also provide educational programs to schools to educate children to be good pet owners when they are older. ORANGE WARNING Fred H. Uhlig, acting director / of the Dept. of Public Health issued a health advisory con cerning oranges from Mexico that are marketed in Illinois. EDB tests showed levels significantly above those allowed by the Federal En vironmental Protection Agefflcy guidelines. Uhlig emphasized that no imminent health hazard exists from eating EDB-treated fruit.
