Committee plans celebration for Wonder Lake Dam "A fun event, not a funding one/' said Lorraine Murphy, chairman for the 55th an niversary celebration of the establishment of the Wonder Lake Dam. Her comment was in response to questions about what would be done with the money raised. She said there is little likelihood that any money would be left after expenses are covered. She emphasized that the celebration, August 11 and 12, is planned as a "fun time and to draw the community together." Murphy's co-chairman, the Rev. Richard Wright, expressed that he hoped both sides of the Lake would participate in celebrating the creation of the dam. Plans for the event include doll buggy and bike contests on both sides of the lake at the firehouses, street dancing, softball games, boat rides, and food stands. In addition, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Harrison School are invited to write essays on their heritage and about why they like Wander Lake. Elmo Bradley will contact pontoon boat owners to arrange boat rides around the lake. A free-will offering will be ac cepted for the rides. Bradley is also checking into the coat ol an information booklet that could include advertising. Chris Niehaus and Jack Crawford will work out details for the parade, to be held on Sunday, August 12. Booths are to be placed from Wonder Center to the lake, with Bill Sullivan determining their placement. Lynn Radke is creating original posters. Steve Simon and Bill Lamont also attended the April meeting of the Steering Committee for the dam celebration. The next meeting will be held at 7:80 p.m. Monday, May 21 at the home of Van Sells, publicity rtainnau. Food gardening discussion slated The second of a three-part series on food gardening will be taught at 7:80 p.m., Thursday May 17. The classes are sponsered by Tbe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5209 N. Walkup Ave. in Crystal Lake. There is no fee for the classes.
