(North of Spring HFII Mall) Carpentersville 428-4491 Area features abundance of summer softball play The crack of the bats can be heard throughout the area during summer, as softball leagues get under way. The'McHenry-Kane county areas are abun dant in the number and types of softball leagues available. By Mike Lamb No matter where you live, from Carpentersville to Woodstock, drive along any softball park on any week day night during the summer months and it's the saifte. 4 Every softball diamond in the town is full of activity. Even as late as 10 p.m., softball can be watched at the many lighted softball diamonds in the area. Dad's softball night becomes a family outing for everybody. And, of course, softball is not just limited to Dad. Soft ball has become a popular sport for women and youths as well. There are leagues for those who are out just to have a good time, and for those who are out to play the best com petition around. There are even dif ferent types of the game played. One can play in a league that plays with a 12- inch ball, while another league uses a 16-inch ball. There is also fast pitch and slow-pitch. At the same time, each town has its own characteristics in the type of ball played. While all of the park leagues in Crystal Lake play 16-inch, McHenry is mainly a 12-inch town. The Dundee Park District features 16 men's 16-inch teams and 16 men's 12- inch teams. In addition, 14 women's 12- inch teams are offered. Woodstock has 20 men's teams play- inch game in Crystal Lake. "Our softball leagues are doing pretty well," said Terry Clarke. Clarke is in charge of the softball program. Most of the park leagues in the area also sponsor post-season tournaments. The Dundee Township park depart ment holds a double elmination tourna ment after its 21-game schedule is over. Cary-Grove, on the other hand, sponsors three large tournaments. The first is for just the teams involved in its park leagues, but the July 1 and August tournaments invite teams from all over to participate. The August tour nament features 32 teams, with 16 women's teams. McHenry has its popular Rusty Nail tournament which attracts 12-inch teams from all over Chicagoland. However, it's not run by the department. McHenry, three years ago, did not have a park league. All the leagues were private industrial leagues. Some of the more popular privately- run leagues now include a 12-inch league for very serious softball players and a 16-inch league. The 16-inch league is the oldest league in McHenry, whUe the McHenry Area 12-inch league was the first 12-inch league in McHenry. Last year another 12-inch league was formed by private parties. Woodstock also has an independent 12-inch league, besides the park league. (Please turn to Page 110)
