Fishing rates as nation's fourth most popular sport Swimming, bicycling and camping are the nation's three most popular family sports. What's fourth? Fishing. More than 59 million mep, women and children in the U.S. participate in the sport fishing. One of the principal reasons for its popularity rests in the nature of the sport. The fishing ex perience can be shared by the entire family, young and old alike. According to experts, children can learn angling skills at three years of age. Establishing an interest in fishing not only gives young people an ap preciation of the outdoors, it also pro vides them with an education in a lifetime sport. As in any sport, adequate preparation can ensure a pleasurable experience. A few points to consider when planning your next fishing trip include talking to your local tackle dealer before you go. Ask what species of fish are biting, and where they are located. Start with a basic spin-cast rod and reel. This type of tackle is the best for teaching beginners proper fishing methods. Also, always provide life Jackets for children to wear while they are near the water. To teach the basic skills of fishing to children, let them experiment with their equipment. Try not to over-instruct. Teach them how to land a fish properly. If the catch is small, let them land it by themselves. Take a camera along to record your trip. Not only can you have photos of "the one that didn't get away," it allows you to return fish to the water that you don't intend to take home. Here's some simple rules to make fishing easier No one enjoys fishing more than kids. Unfortunately, many youngsters don't get to fish unless an adult takes them. Taking a kid fishing can be a lot of fun, and it doesn't take a lot of fishing know- how. Bob Knopf, fishing specialist from Trilene University, offers these simple- to-follow rules to assure a successful fishing trip. • Use spincast equipment. Spincast equipment is rugged and generally trou ble free. Good spincast or "push button" reels can be bought for $8 - $15. • Select a fishing rod which is lightweight and limber. It should be rug ged enough to survive being stepped on and slammed in car doors. It should be flexible enough to bend freely when you shake it at the store. The price will generally run from $8 - $15. • The third item you'll need, and perhaps the most important, is your fishing line. It's your connection to the fish you catch. It's well known that beginning fishermen, especially kids, usually catch the largest fish in the lake. Usually it's something nearly impossi ble to unhook, like a 50-pound catfish. To defy such equipment-busting lunkers, use premium monofilament fishing line. Nylon alloy lines offer two styles, and three color choices, to assure a perfect ly matched tackle system. Buy line with a break strength of 8 to 14 pounds, which is marked on the spool box. • To round out your fish catching system, you'll also need a couple of bob bers (1 to lVfe-inch diameter), some sinkers (Vfe to V4 ounce), a package or two of snelled hooks (sizes 6 to 10), some bait, and a few suitable cooperative fish. • Start out on abundant fish which bite readily. Bluegill, sunfish, bullheads or carp are good choices. The size of fish isn't important. Catching 10 bullheads is more fun (and more nutritional) than catching one small bass. There are 1,000 ways to rig your line. A good way is to attach a bell-shaped weight to the end of your line, add a snelled hook (a hook with a 6-foot piece of line attached) one-foot above the weight, and attach a bobber above the hook. Begin fishing with the bobber 1-foot above the hook. If you don't catch anything after a few minutes, adjust the bobber deeper, at 1-foot intervals, until you've reached about 6 feet. If you still haven't caught anything, take the bob ber off, cast out, and fish with your bait on the bottom. Hold the line between your fingers to feel bites or (keeping a taut line) prop your line in a forked stick and wait for the tip to jiggle, indicating a bite. The best places to fish are small waters close to home. Try shallow areas around docks, weedy shoreline areas, rocky spots, places where trees overhang the water, or anywhere shade is found. Contrary to ttje practice of many beginning anglers, fish -are not found in trees or on telephone wires. Worms (nightcrawlers) and wigglers are available at most bait stores and will catch a variety of fish. Or, get Junior to gather up some grasshoppers, crickets, or Other small critters that scurry about where kids play. That'll keep "him" busy the day before you go fishing, too. When fishing with a young person, pa tience is the most important ingredient. Tangled lines, bobbers dangling from trees, wet feet and Jumbled equipment are commonplace. When fishing is slow, it's important to let junior romp in the weeds, ot skip rocks across the water, or catch salamanders, or do any of the things kids do around the water. Make your first few fishing trips short and interesting. Fish in places that have lots of fish, and don't feel too bad when junior catches the biggest fish. It's always so.
