jversized rackets and frame composition are two new areas that arehelp- Two-year Added strength, size latest in racket news The news in tennis racket design con tinues to be added strength and size, with oversize graphite and metal rackets maintaining their strong show ing on tennis courts today. What tennis racket is right for you? It depends largely on you owrt playing style and strength. Don't make the com mon mistake of buying a racket that has small handle and is too light; get advice at a professional shop that has a wide range of rackets available and provides the expertise to help you make a wise decison. RACKET SIZE: Fewer and fewer standard, head sized rackets (about 70 square inches) are being sold today. Oversize rackets, those with head sizes of 100 square inches and more, allow you to increase groundstroke power while still having control over the ball. If you still need more control, then try a midsize racket, about 85 square inches. No matter what size head you select, remember to choose a racket that isn't top heavy, because it will be difficult to control. Try borrowing different rackets from other players to see how each feels and hits. RACKET MATERIAL: Should you choose graphite, metal, wood or com posite? Stiffer man-made materials, such as fiberglass and graphite, usually enhance control with varying degrees. Metal rackets provide power and are still quite popular among pros. Wood is now seen in combination with other racket construction materials, improv ing its strength and reducing characteristic vibrations. GRIP SIZE: Select a racket that fits your hand when you hold it tightly; you'll notice the difference after trying a small range of grips. If the grip is too small or too large, your racket will twist in your hand when you hit the ball, meaning you'll lose control. There are several ways to determine the proper grip size. One way is to shake hands with the racket, with the lower part of your hand at the bottom of the racket handle and your fingers curled around the .grip. If the end of the thumb doesn't reach the first joint of the mid dle finger, then your grip is too small for that racket. , Another popular method is to measure the distance from the tip of your ring finger directly down to the long crease in your palm, placing the ruler between your ring and middle fingers. The resulting measurement will be the grip size you need. To avoid slippery grasps, you can use a leather or terry cloth grip. After play ing for awhile, you'll decide what type of traction you need,. STRINGING YOUR RACKET: In general, natural gut strings will give you more control, but synthetic materials will last longer, are less ex pensive and are sometimes preferred in the larger head rackets.
