Once called the "town that time forgot," Galena offers many adven tures to history and antique buffs. Located in northwestern Illinois, Galena mixes history with the amenities of pre sent day living. There is a broad choice of accommoda tions and restaurants and camping facilities are nearby. The 19th century commercial buildings house a variety of shops and stores ranging from arts, crafts, antiques, collectibles, gift, specialty and retail. Recreation includes boating on the Galena River, Alpine sliding, golfing, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, picnic- ing in the park, biking, downhill and cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Annual events tourists can plan their vacations around include: • U.S. Grant Pilgrimmage -- Boy Scouts and Explorers encamp in and near Galena, tour points of interest and parade down Main Street. The pilgrimmage is held during the last weekend of April. • June Open House -- Historic 19th cen tury homes, preserved and adopted to to day's lifestyles, are open to the public the second full weekend in June. • Arts and Crafts Festival -- Midwest artists and craftsmen display their wares at Market House Square. Music and danc ing add to the festival spirit during the third full weekend in June. • Fourth of July Celebration -- The old fairgounds, known as Recreation Park, is the scene for games, contests and picnics during the day and fireworks in the even ing. • Flea Market -- Collectors and dealers from the Midwest display and sell their wares in mid-July. • Antique Town Road Run - Pre-1949 autos rally from the Midwest and cars are on display in mid-July. • Tour Historic Galena Homes -- A tour of historic homes furnished with treasured antiques during the last full weekend in September. • Galena Art Theatre -- Theatrical pro ductions some summer weekends at Turner Hall and melodrama in the last full weekend in September. • Galena Country Fair -- An old- fashioned country fair in Grant City Park with 100 artists and craftsmen, down home entertainment and farm fresh vittles dur ing Columbus Day weekend. • Oktoberfest Dance -- Turner Hall comes alive with the traditional celebra tion in mid-October. • Old-Fashioned Christmas Walk -- Art, craft and antique shops are decorated for the holidays and complimentary cookies and coffee are served beside an old- fashioned Christmas tree at the Market House the first full weekend in December. • Galena's Winter Weekends -- Many of Galena's restairants, shops and ac commodations are open in the winter.
