Beauty, boats to open Wisconsin Dells season Beauty and the boats open for their 119th season this summer in the Wiscon sin Dells. Water, sun and fun will be back by popular demand along with several new stars set to premier this season. The Skreeemer is a new amusement, unique to the Midwest, that will enter tain thrill seekers in the Dells. Developed from the same technology that helped train the Apollo moon- landing crews and the NASA space- shuttle teams, the Skreeemer simulates the sights, sounds, wind and motion of several different adventures, making it several rides in one. Twelve passengers at a time will sit in the enclosed 15-foot long mini-theater to experience (me of these five-minute, teeth-rattling scenarios: • 'The Beast," a hair-raising ride on what is billed as "the biggest, baddest, meanest, fastest roller coaster in the world." • "Road Atlanta," a Skreeemer adven ture in which race-car enthusiasts can safely get behind the wheel and peel in and out of hairpin turns at high speeds. • "The Barnstormer," a simulated daredevil bi-plane flight that carries Skreeemer passengers across the coun tryside, flying at breathtaking speeds and daringly low levels. Located in downtown Wisconsin Dells behind the Galaxy of Games at 740 Eddy St., the Skreeemer will cost $1.50 for adults and children. Tommy Bartlett won't be upstaged either this summer. In addition to new daredevil action at his ski, sky and stage show, Bartlett will unveil the Ex ploratory, two floors of hand-on exhibits for children to experience at their own rate, an addition to his two-year-old Robot World. From sculptures that make lightening and bicycles that generate electricity, to robotic arms, living kaleidoscopes, laser art, and voice-alerting telephones the new Exploratory will stretch the im agination while entertaining kids and adults for hours. Other changes at Robot World include four new host robots and a new script. Admission to the Exploratory is included in the cost of the regular Robert World tour. The sun will warm up to the Dells area in plenty of-time for the debut of several new wet and wild water amusements this summer. Appearing simultaneously at Noah's Ark Amusement Park and Riverview Park's Waterworld will be four breathtaking speed slides. The new water chutes will ssend passengers whooshing down their up to 50-foot ver tical drops in Just seconds. Noah's Ark will also unveil Paradise Lagoon, a multi-activity swimming area featuring cable swings, diving platforms, water slides and chutes, a kiddie water-play area and lounge areas in which to sun and relax. Moving from surf to turf, two new miniature golf courses will swing into action this summer. Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, a 36-hole course will open just below the bridge near Downtown Wisconsin Dells. With the emphasis on landscape, the course winds between four waterfalls, two tun nels, three lakes -- the entire way blooming with snrubbery, plains and Cowers. Woodland Park, which features go carts, bumper boats and a haunted house, will also open a new miniature golf course. Themed "Old Kilbourn," the landscaped course will include mini- scale buildings depicting the town of Wisconsin Dells before 1931 when it was known as Kilbourn City. Designed by a recreation designer in California, the new course will include a waterfall and windmill. Both courses will be open seven days a week through mid-October. < While golf lovers are aiming for holes in one, bird lovers can aim their cameras at some of the rarest and most interesting birds on earth at the brand new headquarters of the International Crane Foundation (ICF), located just five miles south of the Dells attractions. Cranes like those which have recently been featured on "Real People," "The Tonight Show" and a National Geographic special can be seen at close range at ICF. Gathered from all over the world, these birds can put on quite a show, with ear-splitting calls, graceful courtship dancing and impressive ter ritorial displays. Visitors to ICF will also be able to witness chicks hatching and see the newly-born birds exercising outdoors. A V. programs and guided tours are available at the complex and there are nature trails for strolls through a prairie restoration and natural wetlands. ICF is located on Shady Lane Road just off Highway 12. It will be open daily to the public from May 1 to Sept. 3 and on weekends through Nov. 1. The stage is set for a summer full of thrills, water fun, robot antics, and natural wonders in the Wisconsin Dells. And when the curtain opens on the new attractions plus the magnificent river scenery, the 55 or other attractions, sports of all sorts, museums, and games and rides, everyone visiting the Dells will have a good time.
