' A < SECTION 2 - PAGE 3 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY IS, 1M4 Memorial Hospital names director of alcohol program Main Street prairie walk Robert Kajdan has been named director of the Alcoholism-Substance Abuse Program being implemented at Memorial Hospital in Wood stock. Lee Pesce, executive director at Memorial Hospital, an nounced Kajdan's appointment and said the inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation program will start on Monday, July 2. The Alcoholism-Substance Abuse Program will be based in a fourth-floor unit at the hospital. The program has been developed and will continue to be carried out in close cooperation with the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center of McHenry County. Counselors from Family Service will be active participants in the inpatient care and follow-up after a patient has been discharged from the hospital, Pesce ex plained. Kajjdan has been an active leader in efforts to help people overcome the disease of alcoholism for a decade. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology, then was employed as manager of several programs concerning alcoholism. He worked with teenagers as a high school psychologist, directed a residential center for teenagers, and directed a substance abuse outpatient program. In 1982 he started an alcoholism treatment program for adults at Central Community Hospital in Chicago. In 1983, he started an adolescent alcoholism program at Chicago's St. Elizabeth Hospital. "Alcoholism is the third leading killer in the United States," said Kajdan, "and public awareness that this disease can be overcome is encouraging the establishment of detoxification and counseling services for suffering alcoholics and drug addicts." Patients can voluntarily admit themselves ||hen the program is underway in July. Family members can arrange to help others as well as obtain counseling and guidance for themselves. "The goal of the program is total abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous provide vital help during hospitalization and in post-hospital care," Kajdan continued. > In addition to alcoholism, the program will focus on diseases caused by other drugs. The fourth floor unit at the hospital will contain 14 beds and counseling rooms. The walk is the first of a new series of monthly "Wanders with Wingate", sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders and emphasizing the progression of flowering plants on prairies and wetlands.
