A better understanding of the disease multiple sclerosis and ripport for research into its < iuse and treatment are goals of tie Mutiple Sclerosis Society's a nnual Hope Chest Appeal and MS Education Month traditionally held between Mother's Day (May 13) and 1 ather's Day (June 17). Pass-the-kit neighborhood 'campaigns will be conducted by individual volunteers in Chicago and suburban communities including the Rockford area. The concluding activity of the Hope Chest Appeal will be the third annual "Le Tour", the weekend cycling event on June 16 fond \7 which begins in- Barrington and takes a circular route along country roads with an overnight at the Wagon WKqel in Rockton. Multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system, usually is diagnosed in persons between 15 and 50. An estimated 17,500 people have MS in the 17- county-wide area served by the MS Chapter. Additional information about services, events and volunteer opportunities is available from the Chicago-Northern Illinois Chapter, Multiple Sclerosis Society, at 53 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago. McHenry County volunteers for the Hope Chest Appeal are urged to call the MS office at (312) 357-3742. Between 400 and 500 persons may die in traffic accidents raring the upcoming three-day Memorial Day weekend, r itimutcs the National Safety Council. The council also estimates* t <at between 18,000 and 23,000 persons may suffer disabling i (juries caused by traffic ac- c dents during the high-travel v eekend. which officially begins 'c 6 p.m on Friday, May 25, and c includes at midnight, Monday, May 28. Council statistics indicate that I st year 437 persons died in motor vehicle accidents during the Memorial Day weekend. "Memorial Day weekend is traditionally the start of the summer vacation season," said Dick Tippie, the council's manager of traffic safety. "Many individuals and families will travel our nation's roads to visit with families and friends." Increased traffic congestion means that the possibility of an individual suffering an accident also increases, Tippie said. "The important thing to remember is that almost all accidents can be prevented through defensive driving and proper safety education," Tippie said. *, He suggested the following tips for motorists: Always use a safety belt and fasten children in child safety seats. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the council's national "Make It Click-Buckle Up" campaign, which promotes greater motor vehicle occupant protection. If a person chooses to drink, they should not drive. One person from a group can be chosen to abstain from drinking and to drive the others home safely. • Maintain a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front. A general rule of thumb is to allow at least two seconds of travel time between your car and the vehicle ahead. Increase the following distance if hauling a camper or if road conditions are poor. If making a long trip, make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition. Check your vehicle's fluids, brakes and tires.
