This annual fair is a longtime tradi tion to yhich residents of the area and visitors from beyond the borders of McHenry County look forward each summer. The five-day fair is held at the McHenry County Fairgrounds on Route 47 at Country Club Road in Woodstock with easy a access from other nearby major routes -- Route 120, U.S. 14 and the Northwest Tollway (Interstate 90) south of Woodstock near Huntely. This year's fair, at which 80,000 to 100,000 visitors are expected, is set for Wedendsay, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 5. The daily schedules are packed with numerous activities and events. On opening day, the antique show draws early attention when judging starts at 9 a.m. in the main exhibit building on the fairgrounds, Building D. The antique exhibition is considered one of the finest and largest in the area with 60 classes in the nine-category event. The antiques exhibited in the show are from private collections. No museum pieces are accepted. The 4-H contests and shows at the fair are numerous with classes for rabbits, cats, poultry, goats, sheep, pigs, dairy, beef, horses flowers and vegetables, art, baking, photography, needlework and more. One of the newer 4-H events, which began last year and was such a success that hit has been established as a per manent event, is the Junior Fun Rodeo. The rodeo will have standard and post classes with junior (ages 8 through 13) and senior (ages 14 to 19) categories in each one. Advance entries must be made for the standard classes, which are planned for 4-H members. The post classes are open and entries may be made on the day of the rodeo. The standard class will feature bale stacking, heifer leading, a goat chase and a shovel ride. The post class will have bale throwing, a barrel run, straw pitching and a water balloon toss. Ribbons for the first 10 places in each class will be awarded, with the person earning the highest point total being awarded the rodeo championship trophy and rosette. The rodeo reserve champion will receive a rosette. With a membership of more than 1,100, the 4-H clubs of McHenry County will, no doubt, have an extra large tur nout for the annual crowning of the 4-H king and queen during the fair. There will also be plenty of other entertainment and excitement at the grandstand this year, where fairgoers will be able to experience an auto thrill show, the group Bandana, and top-name (Please turn to Page 108) Harness racing is always one of the highlights of the McHenry County Fair. Spectators gather early at the grandstand for the pacer and trotter races, which begin on Aug. 1, the fair's opening day. The 1984 features the largest cash total for harness racing purses yet at the fair -- $25,000.
