PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1984 Neighborhood news Ringwood news: Keep those cards and phone calls coming Ruth Harrison is recovering nicely at home after her recent surgery^ In fact, she is back to Doris Low 653-9262 Katy Christopher 385-8037 work on a part-time basis, and says she certainly appreciated all the folks for their thought- fulness of greetings and remembrances during her hospital stay. Arline Pearson is improving nicely after her heart surgery this past weekend. We're sure she'd appreciate cards to help her hospital stay seem shorter. She is in Room 103, Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Woodstock, H. 60098. MOTHER'S DAY Diane and Gary Linstad and children of Black Creek, Wi., were down for the weekend to help her brother Dave and sister Patti Christopher with their mother, Katie Christopher. Mary, Art and Cindy Baker traveled to Strawberry Point, la. to spend the day with their respective mothers. Both are doing well. The bakers returned home on Monday of this week. Doris and Walt Low, with Lee and Scott Miller, spent the day in Elkhorn, Wi., at Pam and Dan Kehoe's and enjoyed a delicious dinner! Other members of the family who were there to help celebrate included Walt and Alice Mae Wilcox of Woodstock, Bob and Sue Low, A1 and Sue Jette, Marcy and Joe of McHenry and Ray and Cindy Low of Wonder Lake. It was a breezy day, so some of the younger set flew kites, and one got away. Wanda will just have to practice a bit more to keep up with y o u n g e s t d a u g h t e r ' s achievements. Congratulations to both Cindy and her mom for their bowling abilities. AH, SPRING A first time visitor to our bird 50 SPEED RACK BOOZE 50 4-6 PM uivacmut. SELL THOSE NO LONGER NEEDED ITEMS WITH A CLASSIFIED AD! feeder was a bright blue headed, smaller-than-sparrow bird, whose feathers add a bit of turquoise on the body, with black tipped wings. Bird books were searched, and the name "Indigo Bunting" seemed to fit. A very courageous little bird, not in the least intimidated by the grackles and even the blue jays that find sustenance in the bird feeder. What a joy to see this bright blue, and then have mama and papa cardinal search for sun flower seeds at the same place! Margaret Karas 385-4934- The pair of Canadian geese we had hoped would nest on the island has left for other areas, but not before meeting Bruno with his bread donation on the shore. A Baltimore oriole has been investigating and also a yellow gold finch. Mama wren is busy making a nest in the small house in the pear tree. Robin has her yearly nest built in the Boston Ivy under the eaves. Woody the groundhog comes out of his hole to see what ad ventures there are out there. On the island a mink (we think) swiftly arches his way into the water. A large painted turtle suns on the log, while fish jump straight up making circles of waves. And then proud black cat Priscilla waits at the door for entry with a squirming just- caught chipmunk in her clen ched jaws. Ah yes-it is Spring... RECUPERATING Little Erin Rogman, Krista and Ken's baby daughter, was admitted to the hospital Saturday, May 6 with a severe case of croup. Krista was able to be with Erin all during the hospitalization, and was even in the "croupette" with her baby during the first anxious days. Erin and mother were discharged Wednesday, but Erin is still a little quiet and subdued after her ilness. That parents may now stay with their little ones in the hospital, helps ease the fright of being sick and alone, which was often the case in bygone ^ears. This was a very worrisome time for Ken and Krista, but soon the household will be back to the happy routine of watching Erin run. RTE. 120, McHENI workshop on LSCA grants, spearheaded by energy charged Bridgett Lamont of the Illinois State Library. Learning how the state grants are awarded and the thorough research that is given every applicant, gave me an un derstanding as to why our library's grant proposal was not accepted. Next time around, I will be more knowledgeable as> to what is expected and how to prepare a grant form. Ms. Lamont was a challenging and very instructive speaker. Other topics discussed by other library people included what- to expect from high school pages and how to get what is expected from them. A report was given by Ms. Peggy Sullivan, dean at N.I.U., on a "Nation at Risk" and how libraries should respond to this attack on our school systems. A review of the nine months of painful planning and the execution of becoming a com puterized library was presented by a young administrator of a large suburban library. The final touch was meeting with my daughter Maribeth van Loon, who is the circulation librarian at DeKalb Public Library. I had known she was at the conference but we had not met earlier. Mothers and daughters seem to have a special place in this post-Mother's Day column. Which is good and proper. GOD BLESS Helen Malsch and Tom Hopp, May 25.
