Central captured the McHenry County meet held at Crystal Lake Central with 126 points, while McHenry was second with 82 and one-third. Jacobs followed in third with 80, Marengo 74, Woodstock 55, Johnsburg 52, Cary-Grove 44, Crystal Lake South 39, Marian * Mike Lobinsky in fifth. The McHenry time of 1:38.9 finished behind Central. Rich Dschida captured two seconds lor the Skyhawks in the hurdles. He was edged out by Marengo's Cole Samuleson in the 110 meter high hurdles and edged out by Jacobs' Tom Koepke in the 300 meter low hurdles. Dave Beste of McHenry was fourth in the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 miter low's. Another second place for Johnsburg went to the 3,200 meter relay squad. McHenry zaps Johnsburg out of Grant softball regionals 8-2 By Mike Lamb Plaindealer sports editor * It has been over a month since McHenry and John sburg faced each other in a softball contest. Last Saturday, the Warriors found out the Skyhawks were not the same team they defeated 20-7. But, then again, McHenry isn't the same team either. The Skyhawks scored two quick runs in the first inning and held the lead for three innings, before the Warriors could get on track. The Warriors held on for a 8-2 win for its seventh straight win without a loss. More importantly, it moved the Warriors into the quarter finals of the Grant regionals against Lake Zurich. Lake Zurich had beaten Rich mond Saturday, 2-0. McHenry travels to Lake Zurich for a 4:30 contest. The Warriors finished Fox Valley play with a 16-6 win over Woodstock. The Warriors' final win leaves them 8-4 in the FVC for second place. Crystal Lake Central and Cary-Grove tied for the FVC title. Johnsburg finished 5-9 in the Northwest Suburban Conference, - losing to Wauconda 14-2. "I was glad just to get this one in," said Wirtz. The game was played during a Continued on pogo 17 CRYSTAL LAKE - Not one of the tennis players belonging to McHenry or Johnsburg suc ceeded in landing a spot at the state tennis meet next weekend after sectional action at Crystal Lake Central last Saturday. But neither Coach Gary Gray of McHenry, nor Dennis Spraetz of Johnsburg feel too disap pointed. Both young teams showed they could be the teams of the future by placing second and third in the eight team meet. Crystal Lake South practically cleaned house for state representatives with 28 points. Johnsburg finished second with 13, McHenry scored 11, Marian Central 8, Crystal Lake Central 6, Cary-Grove 4, Woodstock 4 and Marengo 4. McHenry's doubles team of Gary Strom and Randy Wiedemann joined Johnsburg's Paul Hendrixson in narrowly missing out on state qualifications. Both lost close matches in the state qualification round. Marian is sending one state qualifier in freshman Patrick Han. Han captured the singles title. "I sure would have liked to see the kids go to state," said Gray. "Everybody played very well. Nobody was going to state through the backdoor." Spraetz was also happy with his teams' play. "I was real surprised. I'm very pleased to finish second. We did much better here than in conference. Both coaches were especially happy with their third place finishers. Strom and Wiedemann, both juniors, blitzed through their first two matches, defeating John Edge and Wilttiun lailinski of Marengo (6-3, 6-3) and Steve Kunzweiller and Tim Krodel of Johnsburg (6-0,6-0). In the state qualification round, the Warrior pair lost in a tie-breaker to Mike Frothingham and Tim Dagley of Crystal Lake South. The South team won 6-3, 7-6, with the Warriors losing the tie-breaker 9-7. The Warriors came back to defeat Crystal Lake Central's Brian Johnson and Brad Bengston 7*5,6-0 for third place. Frothingham and Dagley ended up losing the title match to teammates Bill Buckles and Paul LeQoque. Johnsburg's Kunzweiller and Krodel won their first match before losing to the McHenry team. Hendrixson began the meet by defeating John Ladd of Marian and Lorenzo Brunetta of Marengo. He was defeated by Ed Foley in the state qualification round. Hendrixson did come back to defeat Scott McAuley of Crystal Lake South 6-4, 6-4 for third place. Foley lost to Han in the title match 6-1, 6-1. "Paul was unseeded and he knocked everybody off except for the top two seeds," Spraetz said. "I pushed to get him seeded. The break just didn't go his way/ He surprised a few people. He gave number two seed Ed Foley a run for his money." Two McHenry singles players Continued on pogo 14 McHenry, Central tied after seven CRYSTAL LAKE - The Fox Valley Conference baseball season officially ended last Friday, but somebody frogot to tell McHenry and Crystal Lake Central. Both teams will have to wait until Wednesday to find out their final recordsin the FVC. The reason - Tim Pankiewicz and lightning. With McHenry facing a 5-4 deficit in the seventh inning, Pankiewicz took it upon himself to keep Central from sweeping the Warriors. The centerfielder reached on a walk In the seventh, stole second, ad vanced to third on the in terference call and scored on a wild pitch. The run sent the game into extra innings, but lightning forced the umpire crew working the game to postpone the contest. The game will be continued today at McHenry's Mc- Cracken Field. The game was orginally scheduled to be played at McCracken, but rained forced the game to be moved to Crystal Lake. The Warriors currently hold • 4#*eqsrd hi the FVC. Jeft Schuster started the contest for the Warriors, but gave way to Ross Vehring in the third inning. ' Vehring and his brother Chris came up with the big hits for the Warriors. Chris hit a one-scoring double ^n the fourth inning, while Rois hit a double in the sixth. Ross later scored on a wild pitch. McHenry, Johnsburg find sectionals tough ROCKFORD - The John sburg Skyhawks found out last Friday what McHenry knew all along for years - class AA is tough competition. Both teams also found out how tough a Rockford sectional can be. McHenry only scored four points, while the Skyhawks scored pne point in the class AA sectional at Rockford West. Rockford East captured the meet with 65 points, while Rock ford Guilford was second with 49. Fox Valley Conference champion Crystal Lake Central finished with 16 points, while South scored one point.
