Debate, speech awards made Outstanding members of McHenry High School's drama, debate and speech teams were honored at the annual banquet. Presenting awards to debate team winners was Mrs. Gloria Burke, team coach and English teacher at East Campus. Leigh Tevis, a sophomore and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Tevis, was presented the Most Outstanding Novice debater award. Tevis had 36 wins to only three losses for the year. In all, Tevis won 17 trophies for the team. The Most Outstanding Junior Varsity award went to Greg Hajek, senior at East Campus, and newcomer to the debate team. Hajek brought 20 trophies to McHenry High School this year, including three at the Fox Valley Student Congress. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hajek. He represented McHenry at the state Voice of Democracy competition: Paul Westphal, junior at East Campus, won the Most Out­ standing Varsity Debate award. Paul, and his partner Jeff Gealow, represented McHenry in the IHSA state debate com­ petition this year at Bloomington. He was also honored last summer at the Augustana College debate in­ stitute, where he won a national tourney. Two" of the three McHenry County College faculty mem­ bers honored with the Service to Students Award during the Annual Awards Dinner Dance held recently are Jim May, counselor, and Don Barrett, retiring agriculture program coordinator and instructor. Economics instructor Jeff Ryan is the other member of the faculty singled out by the student body for service above and beyond the job's requirements. Sponsored by the MCC Student Life Committee, the awards dinner dance is traditionally the vehicle by which individuals and organizations are honored for academic and extracurricular achievements of the concluding school year. Mitch Ketchum of McHenry was named top automotive program student of the year. Also noted for individual achievement within the automotive program were: Steve Huff, McHenry; John Wallace, Ringwood; Cliff Otto and Marty Victory, Wonder Lake. The College's business division honored computer lab assistant George Fendler of Woodstock. Business data processing recognized the ef­ forts of Bob Boyle, McHenry. Those receiving most valuable player awards for athletics were: Deb Minogue, Cynthia Neumann, Holly Ryan, Dan Sullivan and Steve Svec, Crystal Lake; Tim Anderson, Harvard; Mike Love and Dave Smith, McHenry; and James Aber- nathy, Woodstock. Outstanding female and male athletes of the year were Cheri Bacon and Holly Ryan, both of Crystal Lake, and Pete Dawson, Har­ vard. Several clubs and organizations singled out in­ dividuals for special mention. The Music Club named Diane Meier, of Crystal Lake, its oustanding member. Meier also received the D.V. Nichols music Award, 53 did Joseph Mroz, of McHenry. The College's honor fraternity, Phi Theta Kappa, gave appreciation awards to Noel Schlies of Crystal Lake and Bob Hunt of Wonder Lake.
