MAY », 1--4 Schools Marian booster club raises $4,00 a to benefit athletics and fine arts Marian Central Catholic High School Boosters Association sponsored a walk-a-thon Sun day, May 20,1984. Students and fritfnds of Marian Central donned their walking shoes and raised nearly $4,000 that will benefit the athletic and fine arts departments at the school. The ten-mile course selected for the walk began at the Marian Centraf parking lot A and proceeded throughout the countryside north of the school. Hie walkers returned to Marian Central within three and a half hours. One student commented, "It was a great way to enjoy a spring morning and I would only have slept late anyway. I might as well use the time in a profitable way." Auxiliary deputies from The McHenry County Sheriffs' Department and members of the Woodstock Rescue Squad monitered the course. Crane announced that his office is accepting ap plications for nominations to the four U.S. service academies. Nomination* application packets are now available at Congressman Crane's office at 1450 S. New Wilke Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60005, for the classes entering in June, IMS, at the Military Academy, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, or the Mer chant Marine Academy. The congressman urged young people interested in seeking a nomination to a service academy to obtain application packets as soon as possible. Applicants must be legal residents of the 12th Illinois Congressional District, un married and have no children, and be at least 17 years of age but not past their TtoA birthday as of July 1. They should have a high school education or the equivalent and high academic standing, and should have particpated in extracurricular or-eomnjunity activities-or both--which t demonstrate leadership potential. SAT or ACT examinations must be taken and scores reported. Young men and women selected will receive an out standing and costly education paid for by the U.S. Govern ment. Take Home Actionwear! ELIZABETH COX Twenty-five participants have been selected for a year-long honors project for outstanding teachers of elementary school mathmatics in Illinois. The project is being conducted by Illinois State University under an $87,918 National Science Foundation grant. More than 300 applications were submitted by teachers throughout Illinois. Each of the teachers previously had been nominated by their local school districts. The 25 successful candidates were selected by a review panel consisting of representatives from the Illinois Council Teachers of Mathematics, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Illinois Assocation of School Boards.
